Taking another look at that picture from The Daily Mail, there are some bushes/trees in front of the alley there which the ladder is in. The ground in front of those bushes/trees is a different color from the rest of the ground in that area (mulch?), including the shrubbery off to the left, under that window. I wonder if that indicates that those bushes/trees in front of the alley were only recently planted there for some reason.
(It also seems like kind of an odd place to plant bushes/trees, right in front of the alley.)
