I think Trump realized that if he were killed before he had selected a running mate, then the SWAMP would select the candidate. This way, even if he’s killed, he’s put his stamp on whatever administration follows his death.

Now, if he stays in office (If I recall) 18 months and then resigns, then the Vice President can serve out Trump’s remaining term and potentially, two more complete terms. That would, given the right man, enable the Republicans to reverse much of the damage done by the Democrats in the last twenty years.
