The 20-year-old nursing-home employee from suburban Pittsburgh who tried to assassinate former President Donald Trump was a registered Republican who packed explosives in the vehicle he drove to the campaign rally an hour from his home.
Law enforcement officials were working Sunday to learn more about Thomas Matthew Crooks of Bethel Park, Pennsylvania, to determine what motivated him to open fire on the rally from a nearby rooftop, killing one spectator, before he was shot dead by the Secret Service.

Crooks tried out for the school's rifle team but was turned away because he was a bad shooter, said Frederick Mach, a current captain of the team who was a few years behind Crooks at the school.
Jason Kohler, who said he attended the same high school but did not share any classes with Crooks, said Crooks was bullied at school and sat alone at lunch time. Other students mocked him for the clothes he wore, which included hunting outfits, Kohler said.
“He was bullied almost every day,” Kohler told reporters. “He was just a outcast, and you know how kids are nowadays.”
Crooks worked at a nursing home as a dietary aide, a job that generally involves food preparation. Marcie Grimm, the administrator of Bethel Park Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation, said in a statement she was “shocked and saddened to learn of his involvement.” Grimm added that Crooks had a clean background check when he was hired.

Why did you change the headline of this article?
“”Authorities hunt for clues, but motive of man who tried to assassinate Donald Trump remains elusive”””
He may have expected to be successful and that he would be seen as a hero by millions of people. Whether he calculated his chances of surviving, who knows?
The Democrats today have to say they are glad Trump survived, but how many are saying to themselves, too bad Crooks failed. Bennie Thompson felt obliged to fire his staffer who openly wished that Trump had been killed. (She'll probably get a job with the Southern Poverty Law Center.) But he was spearheading an attempt to strip Trump of his Secret Service protection--he must have been hoping for Trump to be killed.
This is alleged to be the weapon.

If this report is wrong I regret the error. Well off family.
The FIBs are saying that there was bomb making materials at the home. He had a homer bucket from home depot and a dremel. The FIBs are liars.

This guy was socially awkward and introverted to the point of having Zero friends. The best the media can do is find a “classmate” who saw him in the hallways.
This is the only way I can rationalize nobody coming forward yet with stories on his political views.
I believe his social media has been scrubbed, deleted, memory-holed.

probably NSA. They’re the ones who usually prep the crazies.
A dead person can’t hire an attorney except as an estate.
OTOH, a dead person can certainly vote democrat in many jurisdictions. So it’s at least not all bad for them?
My son as a Marine rifleman renewed his expert badge by shooting a perfect score at 500 yards with iron sights. As far as I am concerned that should be a minimum perimeter.
And the Act Blue donation buried in the 10th paragraph. AP sucks.
What do we know of him post high school? Did he attend a college? Hold a job or slum in Dad’s basement. Babe be#rd zilch since he graduated and won $500 academic prize. Did see that in HS he kempt masking long after wasn’t required. Pretty good lefty predictor that.
How do you know what he had?
graduated from Allegheny CC with a degree in engineering two months prior
he did have a buddy that sat with him on the bus and ate lunch with him, according to the underclassman interviewed. What’s his buddy’s story?
would also be interested in what his college classmates thought of him, and how a van with Arizona plates fits into the scenario, and were there any retired or ex-military at the nursing home that he had tactical conversations with?
when he was 16?
Doesn’t make sense. All the rounds fired sounded like semi auto. Not a high end bolt gun
First of all...let’s not refer to that satanic little POS as a “man!”
The review was for a weapon which is set up in many calibers. The one tested in that article was in 300norma but that was the pricey rifle claimed to have been used. I think they said 223 was also available.
My point was that some cheaper AR would have been expected but a 12k dollar gun shows it was probably daddy’s high dollar toy.
