US and Germany foiled Russian plot to assassinate CEO of arms manufacturer sending weapons to Ukraine

US intelligence discovered earlier this year that the Russian government planned to assassinate the chief executive of a powerful German arms manufacturer that has been producing artillery shells and military vehicles for Ukraine, according to five US and western officials familiar with the episode.

The plot was one of a series of Russian plans to assassinate defense industry executives across Europe who were supporting Ukraine’s war effort, these sources said. The plan to kill Armin Papperger, a white-haired goliath who has led the German manufacturing charge in support of Kyiv, was the most mature.

When the Americans learned of the effort, they informed Germany, whose security services were then able to protect Papperger and foil the plot. A high-level German government official confirmed that Berlin was warned about the plot by the US.

For more than six months, Russia has been carrying out a sabotage campaign across Europe, largely by proxy. It has recruited local amateurs for everything from arson attacks on warehouses linked to arms for Ukraine to petty acts of vandalism — all designed to stymie the flow of weapons from the West to Ukraine and blunt public support for Kyiv.

But the intelligence suggesting that Russia was willing to assassinate private citizens underlined to Western officials just how far Moscow was willing to go in a parallel shadow war it is waging across the west.

They could have mentioned which company, “Rheinmetall AG”.

Germany isn't at war with Russia.

But Russia is at war with Germany. Heck, Russia is at war with everybody. It's what they do.

Good plan. Given their current rate of advance across Ukraine, they'll get to Berlin right around the time the sun runs out of Hydrogen to burn.

Yet you Zeepers claim that if Ukraine falls to the Russians, Putin will take over Europe.   You need to get your story straight.

That is not an assassination, it is a strategic strike. We are at war gentlemen and ladies. Whether we recognize this or not, our sons and daughters.... in my case grandsons and daughters, will die for NOTHING unless we step back from the abyss that is being an Empire. The World community becomes more powerful, and the US citizens, our very best, die. Not for America, but for the Empire.

Thing about facing Russians is....if you step back, they take a step forward and stay up in your face. Keep stepping back, and soon they push you over into the abyss labelled "Russky Mir".

Thing about facing the Russians, or the Russians facing us, is that we are thousands of miles apart on different continents, separated by thousands of miles of ocean. We go thousands of miles out of our way to face the Russians.

Such doctrinaire isolationism is fine if you are happy with living in a 19th century level of technology. We live today in a global economy, and we have to protect it, all of it, if we're going to continue to enjoy our high standard of living. The Russian fascist kleptocrats hate that, and clearly state that they are out to knock us down, (or get us to commit suicide), so they can take control. "Russky Mir" is not an empty slogan. "From Lisbon to Vladivostok" is the Eurasianists objective.

Not that global Islam is all that different.

It's a dangerous world for free men. Ignore that fact at your peril.

I'd like to think that the American standard of living relies on many more things than our willingness to subsidize the militaries of those we call allies.

(And for the record, it was in the 20th century when we decided to become less isolationist, especially after World War II.)

I'm sorry, but I looked through the Declaration of Independence, the U.S. Constitution, the Federalist Papers, and every other document I could find related to the founding of this nation ... and the phrase "enjoying a high standard of living" is nowhere to be found among our God-given rights.

If it's a high standard of living you want, you'd probably be happy in a Scandinavian country-club prison.

[Chad C. Mulligan #32] Thing about facing Russians is....if you step back, they take a step forward and stay up in your face.

[woodpusher #33] Thing about facing the Russians, or the Russians facing us, is that we are thousands of miles apart on different continents, separated by thousands of miles of ocean. We go thousands of miles out of our way to face the Russians.

[Chad C. Mulligan #34] Such doctrinaire isolationism is fine if you are happy with living in a 19th century level of technology. We live today in a global economy, and we have to protect it, all of it, if we're going to continue to enjoy our high standard of living.

It has gone from the Russians taking a step forward to stay up in our face, stepping over an ocean in the process, to whether we are happy living in a 19th century level of technology when we have the opportunity to travel 5,000 miles to stay up in the face of Russia, and to antagonize Russia so we can all enjoy the feel of 21st century destructive military power. This will enable us to enjoy our high standard of living, especially if we are invested in iodine.

We cannot protect the global economy by sanctioning half the globe. This merely creates BRICS+ to replace the dollar as the global reserve currency. Fighting non-stop forever wars with no military objective is not a good plan for financial stimulus. When the interest of the debt exceeds a $1T defense budget, it should become clear to all but the demented, that this is not sustainable. Eventually it must lead to the economic big bang, and we reset and start over with full employment for Apple Annie.

The United States has no economic interest in Ukraine other than to launder money or to liberate $billions from the American people to the American MIC. It is not like we have ever had a thriving commercial interest. Ukraine is nothing but a corrupt money pit led by a comic actor, as a client state of the United States. If DPR and LPR fall, the rest of the economic dominoes will fall.

I was not aware that starting a war was a legitimate response to another nation's commercial success. I guess that is now called defending our standard of living. Commercial competition shall be bombed into submission, because democracy.

In which past war were American service members officially told they were fighting to defend our economy or standard of living?
