Greg Abbott Feels the Heat Over Texas Power Outage Failure
Newsweek ^ | Jul 10, 2024 | James Bickerton

Texas Governor Greg Abbott has come under fire on social media over his response to Hurricane Beryl, which crashed into the southeastern United States on Monday as a Category 1 hurricane leaving six dead in Texas, and one in Louisiana, according to The Associated Press.

The storm caused widespread damage across Texas with the Houston area, where millions of people lost power, particularly badly affected. As of Tuesday just under 1.7 million CenterPoint customers remained without power according to The Houston Chronicle.

Abbott is currently on an economic development tour of Asia and was in South Korea on Monday when the hurricane struck Texas. Consequently Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick has been overseeing the response on the ground as acting governor.

The governor shared a post on X, formerly Twitter, indicating he was in Seoul, in the early hours of Monday morning Texas time. According to CBS Austin, the timing of the post was criticized by some one social media. Others on social media, Newsweek found, denounced the timing of the overseas trip itself. Abbott is scheduled to return to Texas on Saturday.

On Tuesday, President Joe Biden approved a major disaster declaration for Texas in response to the hurricane, unlocking additional federal resources, and pledged: "We will be with the people of Texas for as long as it takes to recover."

However, speaking to The Houston Chronicle, Biden said the disaster declaration was delayed as a result of difficulties he had contacting the Texas governor and lieutenant governor, something they both denied.

Referring to the disaster declaration, Biden said: "I've been trying to track down the governor...I don't have any authority to do that without a specific request from the governor."

Well, I think this is a good excuse to get rid of ERCOT that the fed saddled us with years ago-and their insistence on mostly renewable-and unreliable-energy Maybe the supreme court’s anti-meddling ruling will help...

I’ve been in a couple of hurricanes when visiting relatives on the coast. Power is the 1st thing you expect to lose because the wind plays havoc with the power lines and knocks down the poles-people in states with coasts like Florida and Texas are used to hurricanes and we know what to do-do the people who are whining live on a different planet-jeez...

[Energy rates are free market but infrastructure costs are still regulated by ercot. To hide wind costs grid maintenance is delayed. Thus Texas now has an expensive unreliable grid.]

That was kinda what I expected. The periodic checks on power poles and transmission towers or replacements of same are deferred because they never had issues before. Then they get a hurricane or tornado, and some multiple of the accumulated maintenance savings are wiped out as the economy grinds to a complete halt because of a prolonged regional power outage.

Off in South Korea. Ginning up more businesses no doubt. Abbott, Perry, etc are classic examples of what Lenin said about capitalists selling the rope that will be used to hang them.

They have destroyed the Texas energy grid with their subsidized windmills and solar. They have closed dozens of coal plants. And with their Bush culture relentless mania for recruiting businesses from California, from Arabs, from Asia, from New York etc... they are killing the culture of Texas.
The people moving there bring wives and daughters who are pushing to turn Texas democrat and globohomo... and they will do it.

It was forecasted to go into Mexico initially. Patrick is more than capable to handle the issues until Abbott returns. We are not that stuck with imperial governing.

Well guess what? Amazingly, it was always coming your way. My son lives in Houston. Governor Abbot was tone-deaf and should have cancelled his boondoggle.

Referring to the disaster declaration, Biden said: "I've been trying to track down the governor...I don't have any authority to do that without a specific request from the governor."

From a guy who allows his defense secretary to leave for weeks and doesn't even notice.

In his confusion, Biden was holding the mouthpiece of his telephone to his ear instead of the earpiece… creating the “difficulties”.

The Texas Constitution directs the Lieutenant Governor to exercise the powers of the governor while the governor is out of state. The process worked and Lt Gov Dan Patrick (thoroughly qualified) was acting governor.

The left is growling in case there’s a chance Abbott is on the VP shortlist. They also are whimpering about holding Centerpoint Energy responsible for the delay in restoring power. Over half of the 2.4 million customers have had power restored.

There wasn’t just one or two lines down. There were hundreds down and possibly thousands of transformers blown. Start at the trunk and work out to the branches. There are 12,000 linemen working the problem.

exactly, and I'm sure Abbot alerted him he would be unavailable for the time period, unlike Biden's Defense secretary.

An addendum:

Thank God for natural gas appliances. Our house has a gas stove, gas water heater and a gas furnace. The portable gasoline powered generator supplied all of the household needs except the central AC. One 9000 btu mini split was available and running on occasion.

Those greenies with all electric everything had to leave home to survive.
