At this point, the IDF was not aware of the extent of kidnapping along the Gaza border, but it did know that many people were involved. Thus, it was entirely clear what that message meant, and what the fate of some of the kidnapped people would be.

This was not the first order given by the division with the intent of foiling kidnapping even at the expense of the lives of the kidnapped, a procedure known in the army as the “Hannibal procedure.”

Documents obtained by Haaretz, as well as testimonies of soldiers, mid-level and senior IDF officers, reveal a host of orders and procedures laid down by the Gaza Division, Southern Command and the IDF General Staff up to the afternoon hours of that day, showing how widespread this procedure was, from the first hours following the attack and at various points along the border.

Haaretz does not know whether or how many civilians and soldiers were hit due to these procedures, but the cumulative data indicates that many of the kidnapped people were at risk, exposed to Israeli gunfire, even if they were not the target.

At 6:43 A.M., at which time rocket barrages were launched at Israel and thousands of Hamas operatives were attacking army strongholds and the division’s observation and communications capabilities, the division’s commander Brig. Gen. Avi Rosenfeld declared that “the Philistines have invaded.”

The point is many of the dead Israeli citizens that morning were killed by the IDF. The point is many of the hostages were killed by the IDF as Hamas was carrying them away.

In very real way their death was caused by Hamas. You see that, don’t you?

Many? How many? Two? Ten?

Does this (if true) somehow relieve Hamas of culpability?

Yes, Hamas was the attacker or aggresser.

Yes, and in your and Haaretz's warped minds that would make Hamas innocent and put all the blame on the Israeli government.

The majority of the victims were not found in cars on their way into Gaza, but in their homes! Are you getting paid for spreading this kind of disinformation?

So what you’re saying is that if Hamas hadn’t attacked all those people would still be alive.

Got it.

Haaretz is a bit more anti-Israel than Al Jazeera, so keep that in mind when reading their propaganda and unnamed “sources.”

I thought the majority of those killed Oct 7th were in the military, followed by those attending a drug fest in the desert...what is the source for your information?

The numbers are widely available on X, Israeli media etc. About 450 soldiers and police killed October 7th, 750 civilians massacred. In thhe week of fighting and cleanup following about 1500 Hamas and other terrorists killed, plus maybe 500 Gaza enemy “civilians”.

About 450 soldiers and police killed October 7th,

That sounds like the largest cohort among those who were killed, not people in their homes.

How are they a “cohort”? They are a variety of forces m dofferent locations amd bases, some active duty military, many not, many police amd intelligence agencies. You can make any arbitrary definition of cohort I guess.

So my cohort definition is “any civilian” - so THAT is thelargest cohort. Dont try your pedantic word games anymore, it’s boring and you will lose every time.

In any case the killingnof the soldiers is as illegal and unethical as killing the civilians. Hamas is an illegal terror organization with no right to kill anyone, in fact, no right to exist. There is no “Palestinian” state nor any such people, only random ragtag Arabs occupying Jewish land. Arabs - OUT!

Meh...I think most people can distinguish civilians from police/military. That's what you did in your original post, in fact.

Next, by grouping all civilians together you ignore the 'Hannibal Directive' premise of the article as well as my original post in which I questioned whether a 'majority' of those killed on Oct 7th died in their homes.

How many of the civilians were killed by the IDF iin your estimatiion?
