Anyway, I could see Biden announcing that he’s bowing out of the 2024 race. But why resign now? I don’t see any advantage in it for him.

Yeah...I think there could be a misunderstanding, by ‘resign’, resign what? I’d guess it would be ‘resign from the 2024 race’. I don’t see any point in resigning ‘from being POTUS’ now.
