Democrats came into 2020 traumatized by their party’s 2016 loss and by four years of Donald Trump’s hard-right presidency. The party internalized the idea that the key to beating Trump was doing better with blue-collar Midwestern Whites, and Biden was the natural guy to fill that gap. When you asked Democrats that year whom they planned to support, they would often indicate that they preferred a non-Biden candidate to be the nominee — but that Biden seemed like the best bet to win.
And he did.
In 2024, the left’s core motivation is the same: It is essential that Trump lose. The difference is that, unlike four years ago, Biden and his party aren’t on the same page about how that can happen. For months, Biden and his team have projected the sense that they know how to beat the former president and that they will do so again. But Democrats have been less confident of that. Biden’s support has often been driven mostly by hostility to Trump, not enthusiasm for Biden.
Then came Thursday’s debate. Far from assuaging concerns about his candidacy, Biden reinforced them. The split between the president and his party about November has become an open wound. Maybe it can be healed — or maybe it is already turning gangrenous.

Harris would probably pull in more black voters than Biden, which could potentially put states like Georgia and North Carolina at risk. But even then, Harris ain’t no Obama, she totally lacks his charisma. And at the same time, she would have the “Hillary” problem in the blue-collar mid-west “rust belt” states, being perceived as a California limousine liberal elitist. All in all, I think she might actually do worse than Biden, there are a still lot of low information Union voters that would vote Biden, even with all his mental issues, just because he’s “Ol’ Scranton Joe”, where they would run from Harris as fast as they could.
Kamala’s going nowhere.Congressional Democrats won’t stand for as big a loser as her at the top of their ticket. They will wipe every vestige of her from the ticket. If she wants a future in politics in California taking over Newsom’s governorship when he replaces Biden or a fat administration job if the Dems win, she will shut her mouth and support the ticket. The convention Dems will give Newsom a black VP running mate to shut up black party members who whine about Kamala being shitcanned
For Democrats it is all about the party, not the country. The party is their religion.
Van Jones and Abby Phillip agreed that the after debate talk by Kamala Harris showed she was really great and has been overlooked by the press for her many fine qualities as a leader all this time.
The others sort of moved in their seats uncomfortably and didn’t shout out agreement.

From all the polling in 2024, Harris typically was 3 points behind Biden, i.e. if Trump was up by 2 versus Biden he was up by 5 versus Harris. Right now Trump is up by 3 in the 5 way race so Trump would be up by 6 versus Harris. However it will take about 2 weeks for the debate to be reflected in polling averages. If Biden sinks to Trump-6 then Harris might be just as good because her brain farts are merely consistent, they are not getting worse, but Biden’s are getting worse. She could even get better if she stops smoking crack for a few weeks.
