KYIV—Ukraine’s battle-weary troops are desperate for reinforcements. Civilians want to keep up the fight but are less eager to pick up rifles. The West is dangling membership in political and military blocs and feeding military aid but not enough for a breakthrough.
As Russia’s invasion enters a third summer, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is juggling competing domestic and international priorities even as Ukrainians and their Western allies agree: Russia can’t be allowed to win.
On Tuesday, Ukraine officially began negotiations to join the European Union, a symbolic step toward the West, and a small victory for Zelensky.
Still, EU accession is, at best, years away, much like Ukraine’s avowed aim of ousting Russia from its lands. Membership in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, a more valuable prize for Ukraine than joining the EU, is even more distant.
“The presidential goal is to liberate all our territory,” a senior Ukrainian official said. But at the moment, he added, “the current task is holding the line.”
For now, the line is more or less stable. Ukraine was able to halt a Russian offensive in the northeastern Kharkiv region. After months of delays, the U.S. approved a large military aid package, and weapons are now making their way into the country.

A lot of potential in that country isn’t there?
Translation: “We are losing, the Ukraine is out of bodies, we are out of munitions, and drafting citizens of the west to fight will result in revolution.
“Zelensky’s Formidable Task: Keeping the West and His Citizens On Board”
Considering that he just had his ‘Pride’ parade in Kiev a week or two ago, I’d say he doesn’t have a problem keeping his Western Handlers on board. As for his citizens, if he can get away with sending 500,000 or so of them to their deaths in the Meat Grinder, then I don’t think he has to worry about upsetting them.
I thought I saw or heard somewhere that they've grabbed 100,000 suckers in the last couple of weeks to shove into the dike against Russia.
When you gather up all the media organizations, and put them under the control of the government, ban all other political parties, close Russian-affiliated churches that people worshipped at, ban men between the ages of 18 to 80 from leaving the country, and ban elections in the country, how do you plan to keep the people “on board”?
Rod Stewart found that out in Germany when he decided to put a video of Zelensky up while he was singing and promptly booed.
Great points. And, for those reasons, Zelensky cancelled the Presidential election in Ukraine.
Thanks!!
I saw a clip of that video.
“The presidential goal is to liberate all our territory,”
With what army?
The Russians prefer to pulverize just the Ukrainian front lines rather than undertake an offensive and pulverize much of the Ukraine (that they didn’t already reduce to rubble).
Were they booing because of Zelensky or because their country has lots of Ukrainian refugees taking up apartments and welfare money?
I would assume Zelensky, since it was his picture that went up. The clip was very short, and the boos didn’t start until the photo was shown. I wished they’d have put a picture of Biden up, just to see how the audience would have reacted.
If you want to be put in a body bag.
His citizens have fled or go into hiding, to not fight.
The country is a charade.
I really like my new neighbors from Ukraine. Very nice couple learning English quickly.
But I detest that little jerk Z, and our own congress for spending so much our money there. And wiping out our stock of weapons by sending them to Z.
