Search engine Luxxle challenging Google with lenses for searching online
Washington Examiner ^ | June 25, 2024 4:30 pm | Luke Gentile

Rising search engine platform Luxxle is competing against Google by offering users a new way to navigate the internet and letting them use lenses to filter searches by political leaning.

“It takes an entirely different approach than any of the other search engines out there,” Luxxle spokeswoman Molly Koweek told the Washington Examiner. “Our approach is one that you won’t see with any other search engine. We offer far better results, unbiased results, superior privacy.”

“It’s just a much more enhanced experience and one that really puts the users in control,” she said.

Luxxle began in 2018 when tech entrepreneurs noticed a lack of perspective in traditional search engines, according to Koweek.

The engine launched in 2022, and the biggest challenge when competing with platforms like Google is name recognition, she said.

“Really just getting our name out there. When people think of the big search engines, they’ll use it as a verb. They’ll say, ‘I have to Google this,'” Koweek said. “It’s so ingrained in people’s minds that they think of that as the only option.”

Overcoming that obstacle requires a constant push for media attention and user growth.

“There is a need for a search engine that is unbiased, that doesn’t censor content, and as soon as people learn about us, they don’t go back,” Koweek said.

When searching “trump verdict” on Google, Bing, and DuckDuckGo, the “top news spots” presented to searchers were all left-leaning, according to a study conducted by Luxxle and shared with the Washington Examiner

“On Luxxle, 50% of the top 14 news spots are lean left and 50% are lean right,” the study read. “Then, with the lenses filters, you can decide if you just want to see content that leans left or leans...”

Google is so biased it has become unusable.

I hope this one lives up to its claims.

First I’ve ever heard about them.
I suppose it is difficult to get noticed if you run a new search engine. Google is not going to want to run your Ads.
Where do you go, then?
Most of us don’t read paper-papers anymore.

They could use a few good Influencers or quasi celebrities endorsing their product. People may not instantly sign up, but word of mouth would begin to grow.
Maybe that ‘King’ at Burger King can award somebody a few trial with this system after an online raffle.

A friend recommended the Yandex search engine which I’ve been testing.

yandex.com

I’ve also been testing Venice.ai.

One should give these a look.

I was introduced to Google when I lived in Houston and saw someone at HALPC (Houston Area League of PC Users) using it.

That's also where I was introduced to Irfanview. which I use daily to this day.

Two hidden scripts:

…luxxle.com
…searchexpander.com

https://themarkup.org/blacklight?url=luxxle.com&device=mobile&location=us&force=false

https://themarkup.org/blacklight?url=searchexpander.com&device=mobile&location=us&force=false

But between the two there is only one concern that is not really a concern. It is capturing keystrokes, but it is necessary for the “autocomplete” feature to work correctly.

“We found this website capturing user keystrokes.

Key logging is when a website captures the text that you type into a webpage before you hit the submit button. This technique has been used to identify anonymous web users by matching them to postal addresses and real names. This technique was used by four percent of popular websites when we scanned them in September 2020.

On the site you are inspecting, information entered in the name, family-name, given-name fields were logged.

Blacklight detected a script loaded from luxxle.com doing this on this site.
However...

There are other reasons for key logging, such as providing autocomplete functionality. Blacklight cannot determine the intent behind the inspected website’s use of this technique.”

So as for the search engine it’s self spying it actually looks safe with no hidden tracking or 3rd party scripts.

Isn’t Yandex a Russian site? Not complaining, just wondering.

Wait I have to correct myself... The searchexpander.com script is hooked to Adobe as a third party and sharing user searches and habits.

DuckDuckGo is no better than Google, which is now unusable.

Someone here posted this AI a week or so ago... https://deepai.org/chat I have found it to be one of the better ones that I’ve tested. I’m actually looking for a good one for helping to write and edit technical reports.

For searches, I’ve used what is called Startpage for years. (used to be called ixquick but they finally retired that name) https://www.startpage.com/

What do you like about Yandex? I believe it is a Russian company. I think I’ve used it in the past for language translation.

Yandex is Russian, however, still can be good (probably not as left wing as Google!) but we should keep that in mind.

Yes, I’ve heard it’s a Russian site. So far more trustworthy than Google or most major search engines.

I read that using “before:2023” before any search terms on Google will improve results in general compared to their new altered results.

I have not tried it much yet, however. I usually use DuckDuckGo for the usual trivial (non-political) searches and the results are generally still adequate.

I will check that out. What’s nice is there are competing search engines and “AI” engines and one can do comparisons and evaluations based on what one knows to be true.

Perhaps it’s wishful thinking but I suspect Google’s bottom line is being negatively affected by the competitors. The barriers to entry are now much lower than when Goggle first went online around 1999.

It’s that kind of thinking that made me think that all those jumping on the Nvidia juggernaut should pause for a minute.... Is this a company that is just a bit ahead of the curve and will soon be swarmed by competitors? I’m going to guess that there will be no end of competitors for them...

To add to firefox browser as a default option.

Settings/search/

Go down to “find more search engines”. It will go to the firefox extensions page. Do a search for Luxxle and then add it... :)
