A contestant for Miss Texas USA has made history as the oldest person to compete for the state title.
Marissa Teijo, 71, faced off against nearly 100 other competitors at the pageant in Houston, KVIA-TV reported.
The pageant’s winner will go on to represent Texas in the Miss USA competition.
Teijo, an El Paso native, grew up on a farm and became interested in fitness at a young age.
Teijo has taken part in numerous fitness competitions over the years.
Around a month ago, Teijo posted on Instagram to share why she signed up for the pageant:
“I am delighted to be a part of this incredible new experience as a contestant in the Miss Texas USA pageant,” she said. “In doing so, I hope to inspire women to strive to be their best physical and mental self and believe there is beauty at any age.”
The Miss Universe organization recently made changes to its rules, aiming to be more inclusive, as reported by NBC News.
The inclusivity meant removing age limits and allowing married, divorced and pregnant women to participate.

That’s just gross, and lets be honest she’s just stealing a spot from a younger girl that should be competing.

I’ve seen women like this before. It’s fun picking them out in a crowd without seeing their faces. From behind they have perfect figures, a younger hair style, and dress like they are in their twenties.
The tell is in how they walk. Once a person crosses a certain age point the joints go to hell and really affect how many of us walk. Most of these old babes hoble along like the rest in their age class.
But I will say most of these old babes do not have the face this lady has. I’m in agreement with another poster, she’s stealing the spotlight from a younger woman (one born a female).
I do not see any botox or even facial surgery on this woman , however I do see the smoothing effect of photo shop. That being said she is a lovely lady and a testament to the fact that not all 71 year old women are dried up prunes. She evidently is not. Yet as a 71 year old woman myself, and one that has hopefully kept up my appearance, I would not venture into a pageant for young women. At 71, no matter how lovely you still are, a Miss USA pageant is for young people and an older person ought to let them have the spotlight and shine. At first , I thought, it was very nice to see an older woman involved but then I thought perhaps it was actually a very self indulgent thing to do. I guess I just believe that with age comes wisdom not parading aging bodies to a superficial public.

According to the site needs she must:
Must be a citizen of the United States and will remain a citizen of the United States through the state pageant and, if you win the state pageant, through the national Pageant.
Must comply with the age requirement for either Miss or Teen division.
Must represent and warrant that she is a female (recognized medically and legally as a female in the United States).
Must never have been married or had a marriage annulled.
(Applies to Miss Texas Teen USA contestants only. This rule does not apply to Miss Texas USA contestants)
Must never have given birth to a child, cannot be a parent or guardian of any other adult or minor person, and cannot currently be pregnant. (Applies to Miss Texas Teen USA contestants only. This rule does not apply to Miss Texas USA contestants)
Must live in your state permanently and will have lived there for at least three (3) months prior to the date of the pageant – OR – Must be a full time student in your state and will have completed one entire semester or session by December 31st.
May only compete in one state pageant (including the District of Columbia) per pageant year.
Must comply with all eligibility requirements outlined in the official contestant entry form.

The only age requirement is the separation of the teen catagory which this year is, must be born prior to 2006.
Determining what these competitions are for has been a mystery for many years as the definition has been very elusive. “Miss” can constitute just not being married at the time and not using the term “MS”. And women, unlike men, don’t reach their physical peak until around age 32 on the average. So whether the contestant is 17 or 117, if they meet the requirments they can compete and most likely will have the approval of many from an older crowd, and some younger crowd also, for beauty purposes if the work is done. Lord knows how much “work” has been done on the younger competitors anyway.
