Florida governor Ron DeSantis vetoes $32m in state arts funding

Florida governor Ron DeSantis slashed more than $32m in art and culture grants from next year’s state budget, effectively eliminating most of the state’s financial resources available for the arts. The legislature had already approved the funds in the form of two grants: $26m for one that supports cultural and museum programming, and $6m for another for building projects.

The cuts are a small part of the nearly $1bn in line items that DeSantis vetoed before signing the budget last week, but art and cultural institutions across Florida say losing those grants will pose an immense challenge.

“It’s a huge disappointment and a quandary,” Michael Tomor, the executive director of the Tampa Museum of Art, told The Tampa Bay Times. “We are all unclear as to why this happened.”

Among those who will immediately feel financial pressure are the FreeFall Theater, a nonprofit theater company in St. Petersburg which expected $105,000 from the state, and ZooTampa at Lowery Park, which planned to use its $500,000 share of state grants for a manatee rescue habitat that is part of a $125 million expansion. Both organizations said that, while they do get grants and donations from other sources, the budget cuts mean they will have to find other streams of revenue to fund their projects.

Perhaps it is because you are leftist creeps feeding at the taxpayer’s trough.

If you need more money go out and find some rich donors to scam.

I’m both a pianist and an arts enthusiast and I am totally opposed to any type of public funding for music, theater or art.

It breeds a sense of superiority and entitlement along with a Marxist world view. It also subsidizes the mediocre or those without talent. Those with talent do just fine without any government subsidy as they always have historically.

- OR - They can reduce their own budgets and cut back on their projects. If ZooTampa at Lowery Park lost $500,000 on a project budgeted at $125 million, surely they can find something in the budget that can be eliminated.

Around here, I was stunned a few years ago, using a restroom in one of the Omaha Public Schools high schools, that EVERY toilet paper dispenser in EVERY stall in the ladie’s room, had the school district’s logo silkscreened onto the dispenser. WHY? How much did that cost? This is the kind of crap that no one should have to pay for.

My friends-something tells me these handouts to the artists are just pacifiers. You know, keep them from speaking out too loud. Welfare keeps blacks from rioting. Keeps the whites from showing up a the polls unless they have a harvester nearby.

When the new congress takes hold I say go after the crazies and their pet projects. They’re gonna riot anyway so call them on it.

The arts people have been openly dabbling in sickness. Now someone in authority has said, “No.”

I am sorry DeSantis is being termed out in two years. I am pessimistic there is anyone else that will hold the line. There are just too many RINOs that want to make nice with sworn enemies.

well said- I certainly wouldn’t want a mediocre surgeon working on me who was funded by the gov- or a mediocre pilot who learned their craft with gov funding and didn’t give a rip whether they became good or not because they weren’t paying for it and were guaranteed further funding every year-

It’s called learning to fund raise for the arts instead of the taxpayers supporting you. Especially for those offending rainbow painted cross walks! Right?

Actually cutting some fat from a budget? Unheard of!
