Program Director Paul Drew fired Hy Lit in 1968 to be replaced by Bill Gardner, who was Hy's protege. Bill told me he had to hide in the bathroom until Drew had escorted Hy from the building. Bill said it was the worst moment of his career. I worked with Bill Gardner at KING in Seattle in 1972. Bill today is out of radio and flies for Grand Canyon Airways. Hy Lit died of Parkinsons.
Joe Niagra worked for WIBG during its religious broadcasting days. When Storer acquired the station in 1956 and went rock, Niagra remained. When Paul Drew took over as Program Director, he moved Joe to mornings. He was the only survivor of the 1968 purge.
When Don Rose of WFIL went into the hospital for open heart surgery, Niagra took over his gig while he was recuperating. Joe went to WPEN in the 1970s. Joe is gone now, like to many giants of radio.
