WASHINGTON (AP) — The Navy is weighing what to do about the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower aircraft carrier, which has been battling Houthi rebel attacks on shipping in the Red Sea for nearly nine months. The question is how to replicate the carrier’s combat power if the ship returns home.

The service has 11 nuclear-powered aircraft carriers. Generally, they are getting ready to deploy, are deployed or have come off deployment and have gone in for maintenance and repairs.

The carriers have a lifespan of about 50 years, and halfway through they undergo a major overhaul of their nuclear and other systems, which can take several years.

Here’s a look at where the Navy’s carriers are now:

The DOD/Navy announces the general area where the ships are being deployed.

This isn’t 1944.

“ What I see is a mostly useless and very expensive effort to down incoming drones and missiles.

What I don’t see is any effort to take the fight to the Houthis where it counts: on the ground in Yemen”

No sense having a mighty carrier if we’re not projecting power. The ragheads don’t care about the simple presence of a ship

I agree.
The best way for a carrier, or anybody, to defend against such attacks is to destroy, as quickly and as thoroughly as you can, anhything that might be, carry, store or operate a weapon.
Once you destroy Truk or Rabaul as a functioal base, you bypass it without having to worry about it. They have mad the bush about it.de their intentions clear. We should not beat aroun

I don’t know we have some seriously stupid people running the US military right now, civilian and in uniform.

What is needed in response, and seems close to becoming reality, is laser point defenses. Powered by carriers reactors they might stop lots of slow drones as well as hypersonic airborne incoming shots. Probably not good for underwater incoming shots, which Ukes have done well with in Black Sea. Need to find better defense for that.

You are saying in the first hour of WWIII, Russia would kill 37,500 US sailors and Marines? (There are roughly 7,500 personnel in each carrier group).

Japan thought the USA would be demoralized and not fight if they took out the Pacific Fleet in Pearl Harbor. The opposite was true. They kicked a hornet’s nest.

If the Russians were able to pull this off, I don’t care how woke half the country is, the other half would rise up and not stop until Russia was totally defeated.

“Nobody is getting within striking distance of a US carrier. Even with Biden as CinC”.

What is the range of hypersonic missiles and how far out from a carrier group can they be shot down?

I don't think we are privy to THAT info. I do know that the Arleigh-Burke Destroyers have the most capable missile defense on the planet.

I just investigated and hypersonic missiles could/would hurt any fleet very badly. Even Arleigh-Burke destroyers would have a time of it, especially if they were used in swarms.

Hopefully we have something in space to deal with them.

I’m saying exactly that. Do you doubt that a Russian attack sub is tailing every carrier? There is nothing in Ukraine or Israel capable of stopping ANY of Russia’s hypersonics. They have not yet. Each of those subs carry at least 32 hypersonics that can be launched in seconds. When WWIII comes, this is an early, non nuclear, potential game changer. If the Russians are escalated into taking this step, the ball would then be in DC’s court, go nuclear and see 250 million Americans killed or walk away from Project Ukraine. BTW, in 1941 the Japanese did not have 6000 nukes.

I say to you again, Alas Babylon!

There are a lot more Russian subs than Aircraft Carriers. Many of our carriers are in home port. ALL Russian subs are tracked and followed by the US Navy. Those that come close to US ports are tracked by several entities. These Russian subs are all a torpedo shot away from deep sea silent sinking.

The hypersonic missile hype from Russia and China is deafening! Tell me the numbers and quality of them again? Also, the Patriot system shot down many of them. Hypersonic missiles are not a game changer to the real military. Russian weaponry has a very high rate of failure including these missiles, and they are also difficult to steer when attacking moving targets. They are best for ground barrages.

I say to you again, Hardspunned, we know where the Russian subs are. We have unique sound signatures and massive grids of underwater acoustics in which we have tracked them. I’ve seen the real-time tracking in the Pentagon. You have no clue about US military capabilities.

This country would rise up and fight—not with nukes—but with a cold heart pledged to Russian destruction.
