The Japanese scientist whose pioneering work led to the creation of statins, the life-saving drugs used by millions, has died at the age of 90.

Akira Endo's pivotal work has been likened to the discovery of penicillin.

The biochemist is said to have been inspired by Alexander Fleming's discovery of penicillin, prompting him to study mould, or fungi, in his quest to find new medicines.

In 1973, Prof Endo found the first cholesterol-lowering compound able to reduce the risk of heart disease and strokes.

By the way, the Japanese have discovered a new cholesterol lowering drug that’s different from statins, but it’s expensive here.
Of course.

I had them prescribed once. I researched them and found out that they only did their research on men. So I threw them away. 20 years later and I’m fine. I do eat only olive oil. Before my hysterectomy made me lactose intolerant I only had Irish non salted butter. We eat bacon, steaks, etc. but also fish at least once a week. Mr. MERCAT at 81 is riding his bicycle across our state with 700 of his best friends.

“THANK you!”

It’s about $3000/year here, so hold off on your thanks.

The doctor want to put my mother on them over 10 years ago. She read the fine print and said no thanks. Now at 86, she’s nearly blind but otherwise quite active.

“Pioneer”

Pffffffffft. He found a thousand ways of not lowering cholesterol before producing a nontoxic compound which served to enrich big pharma (and their shareholders/investors, all complicit), corrupted the American Medical Association and destroyed millions of patients’ health without their knowledge, all at the recommendation of their ‘in their pocket’ doctors.

Among those patients: Me included.

Put THAT in his epitaph and I’ll eat my hat.

https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/10742484211002943

“Food and Drug Administration approval of non-statin lipid-lowering therapies such as ezetimibe, proprotein convertase subtilisin/Kexin type 9 (PCSK9) inhibitors (evolocumab, alirocumab), bempedoic acid and combination of bempedoic acid and ezetimibe, evinacumab and other triglyceride-lowering agents (eg, icosapent ethyl) has emerged. The European Commission has also recently approved inclisiran for treatment of hypercholesterolemia and mixed hypercholesterolemia even though FDA has put the approval of this drug on hold. Recent guidelines have incorporated PCSK9 inhibitors to treat patients with primary hyperlipidemia and patients with very high-risk ASCVD, who could not achieve adequate lipid-lowering with combination therapy of maximally tolerated statin and ezetimibe. Icosapent ethyl use as an adjunct therapy to statins is also recommended to reduce the risk of ASCVD in patients with hypertriglyceridemia.”

...

PCSK9 That’s the one to look for.

No statins for me.

Buy the book Wheat Belly by Wm Davis, MD. He shows that wheat raises cholesterol. I gave up wheat for a few months, had cholesterol test at my MD’s and LDL was normal again.

I found bread made entirely of seeds, BFree bread, expensive but not as expensive as statins. Natural Grocer has it, probably other Health Stores. Wheat bread with seeds doesn’t count.

Do they save some people. I don’t know? But I do know that they slowly kill some people.

I’ve been on them since about 1989 starting with pravastatin. My mother was on them over the same time period until her fall in 2019, after which she died at 102. Ultrasound showed only 30% occlusion of a certain artery at age 100.

Simvastatin is $15.97/month with GoodRX at Costco so might just edge out seed bread for me.
