This is yet another aspect of the 2024 race where the normal rules don’t quite apply. Candidates typically want a potential vice president who can “balance” the ticket demographically, ideologically, or geographically. Even Trump succumbed to this thinking in 2016: Mike Pence got the gig because he was a boring, midwestern, ultraconservative Christian with some governing experience — basically the opposite of the erratic, boorish New York TV personality. But this concession to the RNC ultimately backfired (in Trump’s mind) because Pence wouldn’t participate in his January 6 coup attempt.
Now that Trump’s GOP takeover is complete, he’s free to pick anyone he wants. His allies have reportedly urged him to pick a woman or a Black man as his running mate, but it seems most of the finalists are men. He’ll probably put a lot of stock in personal loyalty and who has “the look” (he’s known to base hiring decisions on whether candidates are “out of central casting”). This is creepy and inappropriate, but it’s something you have to consider when trying to predict Trump’s VP pick.
Trump said he will announce his VP choice at the Republican National Convention, which begins on July 15 in Milwaukee. He revealed Pence was his pick just days before the 2016 convention.
Here’s a list (which we’ll keep updated) of who is believed to be on Trump’s shortlist for vice president, and the pros and cons of each possibility, loosely arranged from the candidates with the best odds to the worst.

He should pick Hillary which would immediately stop the indictments
Why would they choose Ben Carson to potentially become CinC and replace an aging ailing Trump, in a global war with Russia, China, and Iran?
“ Well, it’s not like it’s brain surgery”
I like Carson a lot. If not him, I’ll take JD Vance.
Carson is a stand up guy, top notch. I'd like to see him in charge of education and lead the way to public school competition.
Your little birdie is not MAGA
I can’t imagine the VP pick will be anyone with the slightest deep state connection. PDJT learned that lesson.
I know I’m gonna get hate, but I do like Tulsi. Ya, ya, she has plenty of give on the social issues. But she’s been burned by the DC establishment and I believe she’s a patriot. But I’m probably biased by the workout video she put out a few years ago!
I hope federal oversight of education goes completely away as soon as DJT is inaugurated. I think Carson is a solid conservative and a great balance to DJT (and a strong believer).
At the moment it can’t think of anyone better than General Michael Flynn.
The best pick from a tactical (13 electoral votes) perspective would be Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin, who can’t run for re-election in 2025 anyway.
Polls indicate that Trump might be close in Blueish-Purple Virginia, and IF that can be believed then Youngkin would be the best candidate to put him over the top in that state.
It’s not certain that Youngkin on the ticket MUST mean that Trump wins VA, but of all possible VP choices, show me another solid and prominent Republican from a “blue” state who would actually help deliver his state’s electoral votes.
Elise Stefanik ain’t gonna deliver New York. Chris Christie (who shouldn’t be anywhere near the ticket) wouldn’t deliver New Jersey.
I’m well aware that Youngkin isn’t 100,000% perfectly pure on every single issue, as if anyone is including Trump himself, but he’s as logical a choice as there is.
Dr. Ben Carson for sure is not a POLARIZING figure. He has shown he tries and will work with anyone with good intentions. I would think the LEFT would be relieved and applaud this choice. He will STAY THE COURSE, and will NOT be moved by all the hollering and the offering of money.
Not a chance. He needs another PIT BULL to close down Departments and FIRE MANY LAYERS!
It won’t be anyone from the shortlist.
Someone on another site mentioned Manchin. Now I hate most democrats. As a matter of fact I’ve lately hated most republicans. Manchin became an independent this year….. for what it’s worth.
I really don’t know who would be the best choice
Carson? No, too quiet. Other roles suitable if he is looking to contribute.
Whoever the running mate will be the MAGA Prince. That’s a requirement. And none on the list qualify.
That’s behind a paywall, so please share the list of supposed VP candidates? If the list includes anyone from Florida, then it is fake or a distraction since Trump cannot afford to lose Florida’s electoral votes.
Pence had the Central Casting look, and we all know how that turned out. Apart from the judiciary, Trump’s record of appointments is not his best feature.
He should not select a member of Congress if there is even the slightest possibility that a RAT or RINO will fill the vacant seat.
I like your approach. Job One is for Trump to win in November. So my choice for VP has to be the conservative most likely to make that happen. (Who that is, I’m not sure yet.)
Trump cannot drain the swamp if he’s not elected in the first place.
