Emigration from Canada to the U.S. hits a 10-year high as tens of thousands head south

Tens of thousands of Canadians are emigrating from Canada to the United States and the number of people packing up and moving south has hit a level not seen in 10 years or more, according to data compiled by CBC News.

There's nothing new about Canadians moving south of the 49th parallel for love, work or warmer weather, but the latest figures from the American Community Survey (ACS) suggest it's now happening at a much higher rate than the historical average.

The ACS, which is conducted by the U.S. Census Bureau, says the number of people moving from Canada to the U.S. hit 126,340 in 2022. That's an increase of nearly 70 per cent over the 75,752 people who made the move in 2012.

Of the 126,340 who emigrated from Canada to the U.S. that year, 53,311 were born in Canada, 42,595 were Americans who left here for their native land, and 30,434 were foreign-born immigrants to Canada who decided to move to the U.S. instead.

That Canadian-born figure is notably higher now than it has been in the past. It's up roughly 50 per cent over the average number of Canadians born in Canada who left for the U.S. in the pre-COVID period.

I am a former Canadian who is now a productive conservative American. I think conservatism is more common when the immigrant is legal, was already productive in Canada, and just wants to be more productive in the USA.

>>>Cost of living is more affordable in the U.S. (unless you’re living in California or NYC).

I’m thinking their targeting non-tax States like FL,TN, ETC. They have awoken to Democratic democracy of fairness for all, yup Liberalism! This will probably new be a new way of conservatives coming south.

Cost of living is more affordable in the U.S. (unless you're living in California or NYC).

Or Tampa, Florida. Where oranges from California (the only kind available) are a dollar each. And auto insurance premiums are the highest in the nation. And where electricity is supplied by a monopoly foreign national company which charges whatever it damn well pleases whenever it wishes, with no restrictions.

This Albertan wouldn’t. Most of us are more “American” than the majority of Americans.

If you find the ones that have come are fairly commie, you have our permission to give them one way helo rides.

This will be offset by all the Hollywood celebrities who will be moving to Canada after Trump is elected.

They are making room for all the people who have promised to leave the United States if Trump is elected to a second term as President. They are also fleeing the death of democracy in Canada.

As a pro-Trump Canadian, I will admit to guessing but if there’s 100,000 emigrating, I would imagine it consists of no more than 5,000 (possibly more like 500 or 50) conservative-libertarians tired of Trudeau’s weak sauce communism (I would be among them but I can’t afford to apply for legal immigration, nor do I see any real improvement at present and Trump can only serve four years so you’d be back into the unknown globalist future by 2029), 20,000 onward bound immigrants (mostly of Indian origin, or Chinese) believing they will do better in the USA, and 75,000 globalists wanting in on the current action (including as article implies a large contingent of returning U.S. leftists who came up here around 1970 to avoid the Vietnam draft — about 5 to 10 per cent of local population is of that origin in south central BC).

In the latter categories would be a certain number of back-door illegals — you are also getting some unknown number of illegals being smuggled in from Canada (it is not widely reported but for example a truck containing illegals was intercepted recently at a BC-WA border crossing). I can’t estimate the number of illegals coming in from Canada but would take a wild guess and say 2,000 a month give or take 1,500. So quite a few, nothing like the southern border, but actionable if Trump succeeds. I do believe border agents on both sides are more likely to take action if they get wind of illegals being transported. But I don’t know if that’s true or false.

Canada went ahead and made its rate cut ahead of the USA. That tells you what desperate shape Canada is in. Mind boggling dives in productivity, 10 years of an erosion in purchasing power, and today came out with an INCREASE in unemployment. Right now Canada is a poor reflection of America.

The government has no regard for Canadians. The massive immigration has pushed housing out of affordability. At this rate none of my kids will end up as home owners.

How I see Canada is there is one in 2 Canadians who are basically socialist. In Quebec that would be 2 to 1.

I read somewhere that all of their hockey teams are struggling except for Toronto Maple Leafs and Montreal Canadians. The fans still love their hockey but they cannot afford the tickets anymore due to the collapse in their purchasing power.

We have issues in USA. But it's nowhere as bad as Canada. But maybe we'll get to that point after Joe Biden gets reelected in November.

Our biggest issue are:

1) Massive increases in legal immigration

2) The attempt to pass laws that threaten free speech

Trudeau wants to retroactively punish people for anything they said that was hateful.

Besides, only third worlders can invade, via Central America.

Funny that you mention this. About ten years ago a friend and I were in Kiev, Ukraine walking near the church of Saint Sophia. A tour bus pulled up and a bunch of people got off. Each had a backpack with a Canadian flag on it. Gave me a case of the giggles.

At least the socialist ones typically don’t want to come to America as they have been brainwashed into thinking things are better in Canada - the capitalists and freedom lovers know better.
