Gov. Kathy Hochul ditched the MTA congestion pricing plan indefinitely Wednesday — saying it’s not the right time as New Yorkers face a cost-of-living crisis.
Hochul announced plans to delay the $15 toll’s June 30 start date, citing the “undue strain on already stressed New Yorkers” grappling with inflation.
“Let’s be real: a $15 charge may not mean a lot to someone who has the means, but it can break the budget of a working- or middle-class household,” she said in a pre-taped video announcement. “It puts the squeeze on the very people who make this city go.
“I cannot add another burden to working middle class New Yorkers or create another obstacle to our continued economic recovery” from the COVID pandemic, she added.
The Democrat, who is likely to run for reelection in two years, had faced mounting public pressure over the dreaded toll, which would have charged drivers entering Manhattan below 60th Street.
“I think the Post spotlighting the real concerns of working New Yorkers definitely impacted the conversation. It’s tone-deaf to charge New Yorkers $3,600 every year when they can’t afford to put food on the table,” a source familiar with the governor’s thinking said.

New Yorkers are struggling with Hochul and Traitor Joe-chul.
She didn’t “ditch” the law. She put it on “pause”. In January 2025, after the November 2024 elections, she’ll end the pause and put the congestion pricing into affect. Her current move is not caving to anyone. She just knows her own Dim voters in Manhattan and the boroughs will be hurt by the dam thing.
“It puts the squeeze on the very people who make this city go.“
And yet until extremely recently you thought it a great way to soak the rich.
Judging by the conservative tone of this announcement I’d say the demons have gotten some very bad news.
Yep. They just voted in “Good Cause” eviction legislation which basically gives all private property rights to the TENANT and not the actual property owner. Want to buy and move into that house over there? Not if the current TENANT doesn’t allow it!
Personally, I don’t think Trump really will steal NYS from the Democrats column, however, it is more likely just to stem the bleeding. Either way, it’s forcing them to spend resources in the state they normally wouldn’t have to.
Exactly. If they were 100% confident, they would go ahead with the toll scheme because it wouldn’t matter, and AOC and others wouldn’t have cared about his rally in the Bronx.
The problem with this is that next year, 2025, is the NYC mayoral election.
So Eric Adams gotta somehow spread the good news pretty quick if Hochul pulls this stunt of reinstating this scam.
