You can easily enter the ‘Frontera’ with no checks at all. However, with the exception of Baja California, you will be checked for a tourist (or other) visa some 20 miles or so south of the border. Try setting up residence or getting any kind of a job and see what happens.

I have Global Entry, and you get a card to use when you cross the Canadian and Mexican borders. I’ve never had to use it, though.
