We are living through what is being called the silver tsunami. According to Legal Jobs, “about 10,000 baby boomers turn 65 each day, and the entire generation is expected to reach retirement age by 2030.” While many people spend their working years aiming to eventually retire, there are reasons why complete retirement should not be a primary goal.
For my book, Leading with Wisdom: Sage Advice from 100 Experts, I interviewed more than 100 top authorities about leadership and life. A recurring theme during these conversations was the idea that complete and total retirement should not be anyone’s end goal.
1. Retirement is an antiquated term. The Social Security Act was passed in 1935, establishing 65 as the official retirement age. This was set at a time when the average life expectancy was about 61 years old for men and 65 for women. Life expectancy for men is around 74 and for women it is about 80. Based on his research, MIT Age Lab Director Joseph Coughlin says that retiring at age 65 gives us about another 8,000 days—basically 21 years—to figure out what to do with our lives.
2. Midlife Is A New Life Phase.
3. Connection Is Protection.
For most people, workplaces are where they get their social interaction

I’m proclaiming the Coming Kingdom which seems to be of Growing interest.
I retired at 62 and for me it was about spending time with my children and grandchildren who were scattered all over the world. I no longer had to miss my grandkids recitals or baseball games. I got to travel to Hawaii, Canberra, and Germany, I skipped South Korea, and could go whenever I wanted and stay as long as I wanted. I was lucky because I caught the housing market at the right times. I sold my house for a fortune a lot more than I paid for it 30 years earlier and bought a house in Texas when prices were at their lowest. Retirement worked out well for me.
I like my job. I am self employed. I will die behind my engineering computer or in my fab shop. That is unless the commie bastard democrats force us to work the fields like POl Pot.
Indeed.
My mom’s mom lived to be 86
My dads mom made it to 92
I plane on staying around at least another 26
Yeah, but you had some great times. Give yourself a rest, then give it another go. Don’t hang up your hat just yet. I’d love to fish the Everglades, don’t really know what you’re going to catch.
Yeah, just got a knee fixed, every day a new ache. But, I’ll trade for the aches and pains over the office bs., any day. Good luck in you’re new age.
Given that text gives no tone of voice, it’s hard to always gauge.
You seem nice; i was right. And, you seem happy, genuinely.
Long Covid brain effects have made me ordinary, not erudite. 😊
I am like you...I consider vacations a bother...I have too many things to do and learn. Soon I will begin learning a new language...Linux! And, am still considering becoming a certified Pilates instructor... because there is no one in my town to lead a class, and I loved the 7 yrs of floor pilates at another cities club.
I hoped that I had responded to Reno’s seemingly shallow post of older women aren’t as attractive (well, yeah, they’re OLD) as young women. As if to conclude that older men are attractive to young women.
Well anyway, happiness to you ! If you are retired, enjoy every day.
I picked up on what you were saying and I agree. Most old people male or female aren’t as attractive as in their past. That is because they are old.
It goes both ways.
Brings to mind that wedding photo of 95 yr old Rupert Murdoch and his wife #5 who is in her 60’s.
He looked like a dressed up corpse. It sure as hell isn’t his looks that attracted her. No amount of walking around with someone a whole lot younger can put lipstick on the face of father time.
