Arab American lawyer sues firm that revoked job offer over Gaza comments
The Washington Post ^ | June 3, 2024 | Maham Javaid

A recent law school graduate sued a law firm Wednesday, alleging that they rescinded her job offer over her views on the Israel-Gaza war.

Jinan Chehade was hired at Foley & Lardner in July but was told the night before her first day in October that the firm was revoking the job offer over statements she made on social media and during a speech at Chicago’s City Hall, her lawsuit says.

The suit alleges that Foley discriminated against Chehade, 26, because of her Arab Muslim background and describes an hours-long “interrogation” with two partners at the firm over her Instagram posts, the contents of a speech in support of the Palestinian territories and her father’s position at a local mosque.

“They called me 13 hours before I was meant to be at work and said my actions don’t fit with the values of the firm,” Chehade told The Washington Post, “and that me being in the firm may make others uncomfortable.”

The law firm says the complaint does not hold merit, Foley spokeswoman Rachel Sisserson told The Post on Thursday.

“Foley is led by our core values, which seek to foster an environment where people feel included, safe and supported,” she said. “We stand behind our decision to rescind Ms. Chehade’s employment offer as a result of the statements she made surrounding the horrendous attacks by Hamas on October 7.”

***In a recording of the three-minute City Hall speech heard by The Post, Chehade reads out testimony from families in Gaza and says the Oct. 7 attack on Israel was the “natural response of 75 years of occupation and violence by Israeli forces.”

That’s like a bank spending money because they’ve got money.

“Foley is led by our core values, which seek to foster an environment where people feel included, safe and supported,”

Sounds like the firm probably has a few Jewish lawyers who threatened to quit if they went ahead with hiring the terrorist sympathizer.

the Oct. 7 attack on Israel was the “natural response of 75 years of occupation and violence by Israeli forces.”

Rape and kidnapping are only the "natural response(s)" of psychopaths. An attack on military and infrastructure targets might be explainable by that reasoning, but that's not what HAMAS did.

Anything you’ve ever posted on the Internet will be there forever - and employers have a way of dredging up all kind of things from years past.

We always told our high school students to mind what they posted b/c it is and will be posted forever, and will be dredged up with possible dire consequences.

Almost all law firms have hiring contracts about not doing anything that embarrasses the firm.

The worthless TWOT can sue, but he will easily lose. And, make himself totally unemployable. Good. He supports Hamas. That makes him a racist ashole.

Your assumption that only “Jewish lawyers” find such remarks reprehensible is mistaken.

There is no excuse for the war crimes of October 7th.

There is no valid excuse for raping a woman or girl.

A lawyer with little to no real lawyer experience, sueing a law firm because they decided not to hire her based on she being a hamas supporter? I think this law firm dodged a deranged lunatic.

Write if you find work Jinan!

Biting the hand that feeds you may not be a good approach.
Drop the lawsuit and run on over to the Cook County State’s Attorney’s office, starting pay $75k, or perhaps you can run with the hustlers in traffic court.

No $215k for you.

“her Instagram posts,
the contents of a speech in support of the Palestinian territories and
her father’s position at a local mosque”

The last two probably are not grounds for revoking a job offer.

Joe Biden supports the creation of a Palestinian state I believe.

Did her father do anything wrong (besides impregnating mommy)?

“$215k”

I would think that on average lawyer productivity rises sharply in the first decade of employment.

I think the firm would be better off hiring lawyers with at least five years of experience even if they did not make partner elsewhere.

I think you’re right about that.

Somewhere buried in our employment contract is something to that effect.

And we are a manufacturing plant, not a law firm.

I’m sure the law firm had their bases covered in regard to the potential of her suing them. It had to be no surprise.

As lawyers, they should have expected this.

That said, if a lawyer cannot be impartial, then they have no business being a lawyer.

Lady, go practice law in some muslim hell hole and see how that works out for you.

Hire a woman and she’s filing a lawsuit against them before even entering the door.

hope she enjoys unemployment.

You have to have a recent work history to collect unemployment. Going to school does not count.

This bears repeating - and should be entered into the record at the trial (assuming it even gets that far).
