Foreign workers protesting the P.E.I. government's recent immigration policy changes say they've agreed to pause their no-liquid hunger strike after meeting with the province's top immigration official.

One of the protest's organizers, Rupinder Pal Singh, said he met on Friday with Jeff Young, the director of the provincial Office of Immigration. Singh said Young encouraged the group to put a hold on its hunger strike while the government considers their demands.

"They have all the information that they require; now we are just waiting for answers. As the government is cooperating with us, definitely we will be doing the same thing and we are going to pause the ongoing hunger strike, as requested and encouraged by the government," Singh said.

"It seems like they received the message and they are working on it, and definitely now [the] ball is in their court only, so … we will be expecting more positive answers sooner."

Students and foreign workers from India have been flooding Canada. Students were supposed to leave after they graduate. They are now refusing to do so. Some provincial leaders are foolishly extending work permits.

Why any government would give in to a hunger strike is beyond me. If those troublemakers want to die, let them. It can’t be any simpler than that.

What does PEI stand for in Canada?

P.E.I. is the abbreviation for Prince Edward Island.

In speaking and in informal writing, P.E.I. is often used instead of Prince Edward Island.

Gandhi made hunger strikes work for two reasons.

1) The British believed he had the discipline to starve himself to death.
2) If he had died, the Indian nationalists would have unleashed hell.

Nothing similar applies in this case.

Did you ever notice that any form of hunger strike rarely works, the person gives up in order to live and their demands are not met.

Seriously, a hunger strike has to be one of the most idiotic forms of protest ever, the person striking threatens to stop eating or drinking until their demands are met, my response, go ahead and starve yourself, no one cares.

...no-liquid hunger...

Is that anything like leaving out the Bloody Mary celery stick? Oliveless Martinis? Removing the pickles in beer? Total lifestyle change. None for me, thanks.

A good and sincere no-liquids “hunger” strike could put this mess at an end in three days. Go to it. I will support that.
