They definitely want Trump dead, but they don't want it obvious to the public that they killed him. Otherwise the replacement Republican nominee would be almost guaranteed to win because of the public revulsion.

I could see Merchan sentencing Trump to four years (because he supposedly stole the election from Hillary by the NDA and got to be President for 4 years) but allow him to remain free on bond until the appeals have been exhausted. Then, if Biden wins, send him to prison. And don't forget there are still witch hunts being pursued by Fani Willis and Jack Smith.
