Students who sued the University of Chicago for tuition refunds due to COVID-19 closures have reached a nearly $5 million settlement agreement with the school.

The private Illinois university finalized the class-action lawsuit settlement with the students last week, agreeing to pay $4.95 million, according to the Chicago Sun Times.

Students affected by the university’s 2020 decision to switch to online classes due to COVID-19 could receive $25 or more from the settlement, the report states.

The only winners in class-action lawsuits are the lawyers.

Years ago I was in a class-action lawsuit against a company I had some stock in. I didn’t even know I was involved until I got the settlement letter. I was awarded $8. Hurray! Because back then $8 could by a nice meal.

I’m sure the lawyers could each buy a nice house from what they got in legal fees.

Meanwhile, venues across downtown were sold out for festivities by undisclosed law firm(s). /s

The lawyers usually get from 25% to 35% of such wins.

Well, I went to U of C. The $25 would probably get me a White Half with extra hot sauce at Harold's Chicken Shack, with enough left over for a 40 oz Colt 45 at Lincoln Liquors.

Or, I could get the Chicken Pot Pie at Valois with sides and and an RC Cola.

Not quite enough for a slab at Ribs and Bibs.

I’ve had the same experience. Now, when I get one of these NCALs (notice of class action), I always respond back to the court with the option to NOT join and keep my right to sue separately. If only just to eff with those stinking CAL lawyers.

That’s happened to me as well. There are some law firms that are constantly on the hunt for new class action lawsuits to promote. That’s why you hear those advertisements “Were YOU possibly harmed by “so-and-so”? Did your loved one die after taking “Kilamee” for high blood pressure. If so call now!”

Once they win, the victims receive a $9.95 coupon and the attorneys receive $9 million.

Teach the kids about taxes. Just eat 50% of their ice cream.

Or win a class action lawsuit and win maybe $25 while the lawyers win most of the $4.95 million settlement.

Situations like this, where the loss is complete (didstudents receive any credit for those classes or not?), and the loss is exactly define able, every one of them should get the full refund, plus interest and penalty for wasting the time to not get classes complete, and then the school is responsible for paying the lawyern’ 10%. The legal bill shouldn’t come out of the award/damages.
