The justices ruled unanimously in Cantero v. Bank of America, N. A., holding that the lower court did not apply the standard for determining when state laws that regulate national banks are preempted “in a manner consistent with Dodd-Frank and Barnett Bank.”

In National Rifle Association of America v. Vullo, the court ruled that allegations that the head of the NY Department of Financial Services violated the free speech rights of the NRA when she allegedly pressured entities that did business with the group to cut ties with the NRA “if true, state a First Amendment claim.” On remand, the court says, the 2nd Circuit “is free to reconsider whether Vullo is entitled to qualified immunity.”

From SCOTUSblog: NRA v. Vullo, by Justice Sotomayor. The decision is unanimous, with concurring opinions from Gorsuch and Jackson.

Third opinion: Thornell v. Jones, a death penalty case. It is by Justice Alito. The vote is 6-3. Sotomayor has a dissenting opinion joined by Kagan; Jackson also has a dissenting opinion.

In that last one, “The court reverses the decision by the Ninth Circuit, which had held that Danny Lee Jones’s Sixth Amendment right to counsel was violated during the sentencing phase of his capital trial.”

NRA v Vullo is not 2nd amendment, it is insurance issue, actually banking laws. What does it mean?

Interesting point on these three rulings:

Cantero v. Bank of America, N. A., unanimous ruling.

National Rifle Association of America v. Vullo, unanimous ruling

Thornell v. Jones, 6-3

It is 1st Amendment, actually.

NY state official misused her power to punish (boycott) NRA.

Sotomayor (wrote 9-0 opinion):

“A government official can share her views freely and criticize particular beliefs, and she can do so forcefully in the hopes of persuading others to follow her lead. In doing so, she can rely on the merits and force of her ideas, the strength of her convictions, and her ability to inspire others. What she cannot do, however, is use the power of the State to punish or suppress disfavored expression."

From the opinion: "A government official can share her views freely and criticize particular beliefs, and she can do so forcefully in the hopes of persuading others to follow her lead. In doing so, she can rely on the merits and force of her ideas, the strength of her convictions, and her ability to inspire others. What she cannot do, however, is use the power of the State to punish or suppress disfavored expression."

I read the opinion as a shot across the bow of the Deep State re: Deep State's use of social media to suppress disfavored expression.

Criminals, muslims and liberals hate the death penalty, mild as it has become.

I hate capital punishment. It is an act of double jeopardy.
