OAKLAND, Calif. - Shoppers at some Bay Area Safeway stores will no longer have the option to use self-checkout kiosks.
The grocery chain confirmed to KTVU that it's getting rid of the self-checkout machines at several stores, although they wouldn't specify which ones.
Safeway officials said they're removing the kiosks because of problems with theft – too many customers steal items when they go through the self-checkout.
"Operational changes have been made at select stores throughout the Bay Area given the increasing amount of theft," according to Safeway's statement. "Self-checkout kiosks have been removed at a few stores. Like other local businesses, we are working on ways to curtail escalating theft so we can ensure the well-being of our employees and foster a welcoming environment for our customers."
The Safeway on Pleasant Valley Road in Oakland removed them earlier this month.
There's just a big empty space where the self-checkout kiosks used to be.
There are also marks on the floor where the machines used to sit.
In their place is a display of soda cans.
And this store isn't the only one.

I really miss waiting in line behind the people with twenty five coupons—half of which are past the expiration date so they can argue with the cashier for five minutes before arguing with the manager for another five minutes.

In order for self-checkout to work, you have to have a high-trust society. As long as you have any significant percentage of blacks or hispanics in your population, you can’t have that.

We can’t have first-world modern conveniences when the country has a growing group of third-world people.
10-15 registers and 2 wandering employees is saving the cost of 8-12 cashiers.
I don’t see all self-checks full when I go in so the number 8-2 seems high to me. Except Dec 24 or the day before thanksgiving I used to never see more than 3 checkers.

This is 100% true. Everywhere.

Yes, there has to be.
And yes, it still happens.
Yeah, you basically have to have the barcode. There’s a way to override it but it won’t count inventory properly. Big whoop.
Just scan twice next time you’re there. It will all work out.

Amazon tried that. Though they laid off a bunch of people, I suspect it’s still alive in a few areas.
Walmart in Porter Ranch, Calif shuts the self check out by 4pm.
#4 I saw a guy run out the emergency exit with something next to the butcher counter, an alarm went off. An employee did too and motioned for another and they discussed it but nothing they could do. A planned theft.
