CLINTON, N.C. (WNCN) — A fire station in North Carolina was left nearly unable to operate after a group of four people broke in and hauled off with crucial equipment.
According to the Sampson County Sheriff’s Office, one of those four suspects has been identified and charged since the May 14 break-in and theft took place in Clinton. Deputies responded to the Piney Grove Fire Department where they discovered a “substantial loss in equipment.”
The sheriff’s office said the gear taken from the station is valued at more than $100,000. After the theft, the department had to place one engine out of service and used equipment from other area fire stations to be able to serve the community in an emergency situation.
“There were several hours there we had no way to respond. If we had come at night to respond to a call, we’d have to respond in the middle of the night, without us knowing what was going on, we’d get here and our trucks would be empty,” said Chief Ashley Grimes. “It could be somebody’s life in danger, inside of the house, can’t get out. And here we are with trucks we can’t respond with.”
“Our fire communities work hard to secure much needed life saving equipment to serve their communities. I am angry that individuals would prey on these public servants and hamper their services to our community,” said Lt. Marcus Smith with the sheriff’s office.
“It takes us a long time to get where other fire departments are. Years and years of hard work. These guys and ladies put in their volunteer time away from their families. Then [these thieves] come in and in 45 minutes steal everything we had. It’s heartbreaking to know that somebody would stoop that low,” said Chief Grimes.

Charge them with attempted murder.
I saw a picture of one of the perpettrators from a security camera
Surprise, surprise, surprise!!! NOT!!
“I saw a picture of one of the perpettrators from a security camera”
Yep, the usual suspects.
Shocking!
I’ve always wondered why is it so hard to find out who took items like this when they have one. Why don’t the LE just say to the thief in hand, that the time for theft like this is, let’s say, 2 years. Let him know that there were four people stealing. Since it is 2 years in prison, and since he is the only one caught and he won’t disclose the others, then he serves their terms also. That means he gets 8 years in the can while his “friends” party and live a life.
But, if he turns one in he loses 2 years. Another one, 2 more. And the third, the other two. Now he will be serving 2 years and the others involved will be caught and serve 2 years. And the only favor he gets is he will be guarenteed not to be allowed any contract with the other 3 until they all are released and he will be released a month early to get lost. Sounds fair to me. All the prison time that would have been served will be satisfied, all those who should get it are, and the one can get lost so he won’t be a problem with the other 3 when they look for him. And the one who talked, will be out of the area permanently and won’t bother the locals again. (Or the other 3 may find him, same situation) Win/win

Put them in a burning building with a fire alarm caller.
I was going to say to drive up to Vance County and get him but read he was from Pender. Or Craven.
It’s a pretty clear photo so law enforcement should be able to locate at least that one lowlife and get him to rat out the others. Then throw the book at them all to make an example.
It’s always them, Boo Boo!
I’m originally from Craven. New Bern. Sampson County is right behind Robeson as the dung holes of NC.
That whole area is going downhill. You can pick up nice houses cheap now, from Henderson to Kinston.
Five years ago, that would have been a good amount of money...
Kinston is a crap hole.
How about we just shoot all thieves
“How about we just shoot all thieves”
In this case, if you shoot the one then the other three get off scott free. I was thinking it could be used as an incetive to get the other three. And the determined sentence, probably different in every state, would be satisfied for all the perps with the warm fuzzy going to the stool pidgeon to get him out early to run from the ones that he informed on.
