* Chipmakers ASML and TSMC can disable advanced chipmaking machines remotely, Bloomberg reports.
* The move addresses growing fears of a Chinese invasion of Taiwan, a key semiconductor producer.
* A China-Taiwan conflict could severely impact the global economy.
Two of the world's most important chip companies can flip a "kill switch" remotely on their most advanced chipmaking machines should China invade Taiwan, Bloomberg reported on Tuesday, citing people familiar with the matter.
The Netherlands' ASML — Europe's top tech company by market value — supplies advanced machines to chipmaking companies. They include Taiwan's TSMC, which produces, by some estimates, 90% of the world's most advanced processor chips.
The news of a forced shutdown, or a "kill switch," on ASML's chipmaking gear comes amid intensifying rivalry between Washington and Beijing and mounting concerns over a potential Chinese invasion of Taiwan, which Beijing claims as its own territory.
Taiwan is the world's epicenter for semiconductor chips, the ubiquitous parts that are used in products from data centers to smartphones. A war in the region would have major consequences for the global economy.
The US, citing national security concerns, imposed restrictions on China under the Advanced Computing Chips Rule in November. The restrictions make it harder for the East Asian giant to import advanced AI chips from American manufacturers.

Ha Ha Ha. Take that you commie Bass Turds.

the switches would kill much more than just the chip machines.
TSMC: PLEASE don’t blow-up our factories! We won’t make chips for the commies! We promise!
I sold all of my TSMC stock. Too much risk.
“Ha Ha Ha. Take that you commie Bass Turds.”
And a world-wide chip shortage begins ...
Would it be better if China had total control over TSMC? The TSMC plant in Arizona seems to have been impacted by problems that were self-imposed by the USA.
"Hey, as long as I get my ice cream cone, who cares about chips?"
If they can inact a kill switch that means there is a kill switch which means there is a built in vulnerability that they think is uncrackable...until it’s cracked.
What happens if they just do a blockade, like the Houthis ?
Gee maybe it would be a good idea to make chips here, don’cha think?
Now that’s smart!
How?
I was hoping the kill switch was in the chips controlling the Chinese aircraft and ships. Could you imagine the collective pants crapping if every jet fell out of the sky at the same time.
China is not going to have to invade Taiwan.
Think Austria 1938, not Poland 1939.
Austrians were pretty happy to see the Nazis come into Vienna.
Not so sure that’s the case here.
Can also be turned back on when China writes a big enough check.
Best kill switch is a dozen JDAMs
Gee maybe it would be a good idea to make chips here, don’cha think?

Along with some pharmaceuticals, medical equipment and bandage or two.
I’m not sure, either - but the Germans living in “Austria” were happy because they were Germans first, and the Han living on the island, when they have to decide, will turn out to be Han first IMO.
When the American neocons are hotter for war than you and your people are (unquestionably the case here), you get Ukraine.
Hope I’m wrong - but I doubt it.
