Illinois court order halts mid-election rule change enacted by Pritzker

The Liberty Justice Center secured a court order temporarily halting enforcement of an Illinois law that Gov. J.B. Pritzker hastily enacted prohibiting candidates that didn't run in the primary from being slated for the November election.

Earlier this month, super-majority Democrats in the Illinois legislature approved and the governor signed a mid-election year law ending the slating of candidates. Following a lawsuit, a Sangamon County judge ruled Wednesday that Illinois’ ability to enforce the election law against potential candidates is on hold.

Prior to signing the bill, Pritzker called it an “ethics bill.”

“It really does make sure that we don’t have backroom deals to put people on the ballot and run as a result of some small group of people in a smoke filled room making the choice. So I think, to me, more transparency is better,” said Pritzker.

There are 78 active statehouse races affected by the new law.

“We applaud the Court’s decision to uphold the rule of law and support voting rights for all people in Illinois,” Jeffrey Schwab, senior counsel at the Liberty Justice Center, said. “We look forward to continuing to defend these fundamental rights in court and will be pressing forward to ensure the preliminary injunction becomes permanent.”

The next hearing in the case is scheduled for June 3. That's the same day candidates looking to be slated must file ballot access petitions with the Illinois State Board of Elections.

The law not allowing "slating" was passed just a couple weeks ago, after it was too late for candidates to get on the ballot. So, the left changed election law mid-stream in order to prevent the GOP from being able to run a slate of candidates. You shouldn't be able to change the laws after elections have gotten underway.

It sounds like this law would screw the Democrats if Joe keeled over in, let’s say, July. They couldn’t replace him on the ballot with Newsome, or Michelle, or Hillary because none of them ran in the primary. The Convention would not be able to put forward a Dark Horse candidate. Am I reading this right?

Illinois is solid red south of Chicago.

Can’t stop the vote fraud in Chicago, but I do wonder if Repubs actually campaigned in Chicongo, and got their numbers up there just a little bit, if it would help them win state-wide races. Usually, Repubs completely ignore chicongo and I think thats a mistake. Especially now is the time to strike with kitchen table issues like inflation hurting the Dems so bad. I think there are ears ready to listen even in the big cities to the REpublican message.

I live in Illinois. My county just voted not to be a sanctuary county. Trump needs to go to Chicago.

Illinois was toss up and even leaned Republican until that POS George Ryan destroyed the party, imo. Extremely poor leadership by the Repubs in IL. That mannish looking woman was running the party for a while, i forget her name or position. She did not help any.

I’m in Illinois, too. The Republicans in this state need to stop sitting on their hands twiddling their thumbs and start fighting for what’s right. They’ve become too comfortable and complacent in ther statehouse jobs.

IOW, SOP for democrats.

The irony of him complaining about it and taking the moral high ground.

Jan Shakowski—or some such—is the name you’re after, correct ?

I got out of Illinois while the getting was good 45 years ago. The rest of the family there is outside of the cesspool, but family and farmland keep them anchored there....although I did hear last week one of the families is headed for Charlotte. Big news !

Darren Bailey was the republican GOP candidate for governor last year. He campaigned all over the state. Pritzger didn’t do a thing. Still, on election night, 5 minutes after the polls closed and a single vote was counted, he was declared the winner. Democrats have run this state from top to bottom for over 100 years, back to the days of Al Capone.

not true. IL has had several Republican senators in recent history - fitzgerald, and the brain dead guy from chicago suburbs.. Jim Edgar was gov for a long time, then G Ryan was a ‘republican’ that ruined the brand.

Republicans can win this state if they can cut down the fraud in chicongo and reduce their margin of defeat in crook county. They don’t need to even come close in crook county, they just need to shrink the margin.

That’s what I was thinking as well. But my skeptical side wondered if this was some sorta anti-RFK rule.

There is no Republican Party in Illinois. There is only The Combine.

I’ve been in it, seen it up close, and it’s completely disgusting.

From a great distance, I think Pritzker is one of the few who would have the chutzpah to pick up the mantle when Joe resigns this summer.

Your assessment ?

Yes, Pigster has the funds and the desire to run for President, he will absolutely be in the mix when the pedo’s term is over.
