The Significance of Ireland, Spain, and Norway’s Recognition of a Palestinian State
Time ^ | 5/22/24Ga | Yasseen Serhan

Since 1948, Palestinians living in the West Bank, East Jerusalem, and Gaza have remained effectively stateless, caught in the limbo of a decades-long peace process that has yielded neither peace nor a state to call their own. But on Wednesday, three European countries—Ireland, Norway, and Spain—announced their decision to officially recognize a Palestinian state alongside Israel. The decision is set to go into effect on May 28.

Irish Taoiseach (Prime Minister) Simon Harris, who announced the decision in a press conference, likened Palestinians’ bid for self-determination to the Irish people’s history seeking international recognition of their independence in 1919. “Today, we use the same language to support the recognition of Palestine as a state,” he said, noting that he expects further countries to join them “in the coming weeks.”

Irish: Why, it’s so lucky for us that we avoided any of the factional divisions of two groups squaring off in violence against each other. We’ve always been at peace and in harmony in Ireland./S

History note: 3,500 dead in Ireland.
Along with terror bombings in populated areas, the daily killings included booby traps and shots fired.

The conflict in Northern Ireland that has become known as the Troubles started in the late 1960s and largely ended following the Good Friday or Belfast Agreement of 1998. The violence led to over 3,500 deaths.

I remember when Bobby Sands starved himself to death in prison on a hunger strike and when Lord Mountbatten was blown up in his boat by a hidden bomb. Those troubles?

Israel needs to make a decision. Are the conquered territories of the West Bank and Gaza a part of Israel or not. If they are then go ahead and annex them, granting citizenship to their Arab residents. If not then cede them to those living there and recognize them as a state alongside Israel. I know that it is a hard decision and frankly and do not know which would be better, but in the end these are the only two choices. Both sides have to accept that neither the Jews nor the Arabs are going anywhere. Dragging this out only adds to the frustration of the Arabs and leads to greater radicalization.

The Irish/Spanish/Norse politicians make fools of themselves.
And embarrass their nations.

That’s all the significance they have.
None whatsoever outside their nice little countries.

I agree with the posters on a previous thread.

Israel should recognize Catalonia, Basque Country, Galicia, Northern Ireland, and Saami Land as independent countries.

“And what is the border of this State?”

I think its capital is Dublin and its borders surround Madrid and Oslo. Those have been Palestinian lands for time immemorial. The Irish, Spanish and Norwegians are the Occupiers, and must be expelled. They can all go back to Poland.

Ireland, Spain, and Norway have recognized a state that does not exist. They have demonstrated nothing but their terrorist sympathies and their anti-Semitism. Some will split hairs and say it is simply anti-Zionism not anti-Semitism. They are wrong. There is no difference between the two.

Expelled the Jews at the end of the fifteenth century. I guess not much has changed.

Israel no doubt already does recognize Northern Ireland as an independent state (independent of Ireland at least) and in fact so does the government in Dublin.

The fight is not about a state for Palestinians. It never was about a state for Palestinians. Giving the Palestinians a state will not bring peace. It will only make it easier to make war on Israel. The West Bank so called was originally part of Jordan. They lost it in the 1967 war. Israel is not giving it back. Gaza was a heavily Arab town and area which was demarcated in 1949 and governed by Egypt until the 1967 war. Israel occupied it then but never wanted it. That’s why they gave it back. I believe the whole mess is basically insoluble by diplomacy and whatever comes of the present conflict, this dilemma will ultimately not end well.
