These historic walls still exist along most of the boundary of Vatican City today. And the openings and interior are guarded by the Swiss Guards who are a trained military force that upholds its duty to protect the Pope should any forces threaten him.
So they have walls to not permit just anyone to enter the Vatican and a trained military force to secure it.
