The high school where I graduated in 1973 had 2 black students, 5% hispanic and a small number of "asian" students. It was over 90% white and top of the line academically. Today it is 80% hispanic, 11% white. That reflects the changing demographics of Chula Vista, CA. It isn't intentional segregation. Academically it looks terrible now. Math proficiency at grade level: 21%. English proficiency at grade level: 55%. Science proficiency at grade level: 21%.

I visited the campus in Sept 2023 for my class 50th reunion. We were taken on a tour of the campus. Lockers are gone. Bolted tight to fend off drug dealing. Classroom doors have extra security. Lots of high end classes with good financing on campus (better $$$ than when I attended). One can not excuse the poorer performance because of inadequate funding.

There is a "special" space for the "developmentally challenged". In 1973 the phrase was "zoo English" for those who would not or could not grasp the instructional opportunities. Often the PE teachers were tasked with the "zoo" classes.
