~The FReeper Canteen Presents~

Road Trip: Naval Weapons Station Seal Beach, California

CAnwssealbeach2

Naval Weapons Station Seal Beach is a United States Navy weapons and munitions loading, storage and maintenance facility located in Seal Beach, California with detachments in Fallbrook, and Norco, both also in California. It also encloses the Seal Beach National Wildlife Refuge.

CAnwssealbeach6

The command exists to provide base operating support to the Navy's ordnance mission. Command and tenant personnel provide munitions receipt, segregation, inspection, maintenance, storage, issue, and assessment services to Navy operating forces and other Department of Defense and homeland security entities.

CAnwssealbeach5

Unique among most naval weapons facilities, Detachment Fallbrook is located 9 miles inland. Ammunition is transferred to and from ships by a process known as Vertical Replenishment, or VERTREP. In this operation, ammunition is taken by truck from a magazine on base to a helicopter pad located inside Camp Pendleton.

From there MH-60S Seahawk helicopters pick up the load and transfer it to the receiving ship waiting several miles off the coast. In this manner, large vessels such as amphibious assault ships can be loaded without leaving their primary Southern California operating and training areas.

The station has an active environmental cleanup program. One-fifth of the facility's land area has been designated as a National Wildlife Refuge (the only such refuge within a five-county area), and is home to many endangered and threatened species. The station is also home to the nation's West Coast WWII Submarine Memorial.

Hey there, radu!

Well, it “only” got up to 99, but yes, it is too toasty to be comfortable. Sorry you have the same problem, but I imagine a lot of yours was humidity-wise.

How ‘bout that snake, huh! 😵‍💫

Hey, you got a break today. “Only” 99. LOL
It was a muggy 89 here this afternoon with a decent breeze.

Too bad Bonnie and the kiddos weren’t close by when that snake slithered around the nest. That was enough to fill all three of them. *shudder*

It would have slid down like spaghetti. LOL!

You were 89 then and 68 now. We were 99 then and 88 now. You win. :D Good news, is tomorrow will be a bit cooler. Not much, but a bit.

In many years I have never seen any munitions transported or loaded at Naval Weapons Station Seal Beach, although it is hard to see the jetty from Seal Beach Blvd or PCH, and max one destroyer sized ship.
Looks like a nice place though, many bunkers, but not like Nevada.

We’re fortunate to have cool nights, at least. It’ll warm up fast once the sun comes up.
Good that you have a cooling trend ahead, even if only a little bit. Still going the right direction.

I hope for some clouds tomorrow afternoon because I really need to mow along the driveway again, and there’s no shade at all. It’s already long and there are good chances for rain every day from Wednesday through next Monday, at least. I can’t wait that long to mow that stretch.
Had a “hitchhiker” for a few minutes while I mowed the back yard this afternoon. A cicada landed on my hand and rode along with me. LOL

Well, goodness! Did he serenade you along the way? LOL! That doesn’t happen often, I’ll bet. I guess there are still tons of them?

Hope you get your clouds. It’ll sure help when being out there doing all that work. You don’t have much choice, though, huh, with the rain coming again soon. Lucky!

A very pleasant good Tuesday morning and ((HUGS)) to everyone at the Canteen and to all our military at home and abroad. Thanks for your service to our country and thanks Lauren for this morning's thread.

Yesterday at Comanche Lake:

When the iPhone camera comes out he stops smiling. When I put it back up he smiles again. He's really an entertaining dog to say the least.

How's everyone doing this morning?

It didn’t make a sound until it took off. It took a couple of seconds to realize what had landed on me. It was one of the 17-year cicadas and they’re prettier than the annual ones. The annuals are drab but they’re cute in the own funky li’l way. LOL

It doesn’t look very promising for clouds tomorrow. They mentioned wind tomorrow and I hope it isn’t as bad as it was the last time I mowed that stretch. A breeze like today would be perfect.

Hiwdy, E.G.C. ((HUGZ))

You certainly are having some pretty weather over there. Looks like it was a bit on the warm side though.

Just what you need for a mowing day is more wind. You’ll be wearing grass again.

Do the 17-year ones that you have there have red eyes like others I’ve seen in pictures. I just think they’re icky. But it is interesting to watch them emerge from their exoskeleton.

A breeze like today will be perfect. I had no grass on me and that was a good thing since Dusty and crew showed up with the spray rig as I was mowing the last strip. No way I was going to stay outside with spraying going on. Instead of going out to the shop to use the air hose to blow grass off of Champ, I headed to the house and parked in the garage. Champ will get the air hose tomorrow when I finish.

Yes, they have red eyes. They’re pretty bugs.
And yes, it’s interesting to watch them emerge. I spent many a night at the old house going outside periodically to watch when I spotted one in the process. Then I’d take the empty exoskeleton in the house to mess with the cats. LOL

It was indeed on the warm side. I think we have one more warm day today (92 for a high) and then we go back down to the 80’s Wednesday into the weekend.

Heehee! That’s mean. 😬 I never thought of doing that. Might just try if one emerges around here. So far the nights are completely quiet. Except for idiot dogs. And traffic on the busy street 2 blocks away.

Good thing you noticed Dusty with his nasty spray so you could escape it. Just what you’d need is more stuff giving you allergies.

It’s been only a couple of degrees cooler here and we have two more hot days before cooling down a little through the weekend. And we’ll have rain with that cool-down. That’s great for the crops growing here but I’m a little tired of it. A little dry spell would be nice.

Yeeeeaaaahhh, a little mean but it’s good to keep the kitties on their toes. LOL

There are crickets and frogs singing at night these days. I’m waiting for July when the katydids come out.

I knew Dusty would be here because I saw them pull the big tanker truck onto the little gravel rode that runs along the far side Hubby’s cousin’s field when I took Shags to the vet. I thought he’d have the spray rig here when I got back and mowing would be a ‘no’ but nope. I kept my eye out since he always starts with the field in of the house and was afraid I’d only get a little done. But when he showed up, I just had one strip to go. He must have seen me because he sat there until I had Champ I the garage and the door was closed.
He didn’t finish until around 10:00 tonight. Not sure what he sprayed this time because he sprayed weed killer last week. Maybe it was fertilizer. Whatever it was, I don’t want to be outside while he sprays.

I love the sound of frogs. But of course, we have no water either. LOL! You get all the good stuff.

I’ve GOT to go. Yeesh, I just looked at the clock. I wondered why my eyes are so googly...and burn. See ya tomorrow! Get that mowing done!

I enjoy the frogs too. I miss the bullfrogs that used to live at a pond across the road. The man who owned that field sold it several years ago and the new owner filled in the pond. boohiss on him! But there are other frogs and toads aplenty.

You’re going to be a “vampire” before you know it. LOL You keep inching that way. I was born one so staying up this late is natural. But I’m on the way to the bat cave now that everything’s done.
Sleep well and late! Catch ya tomorrow.
