Germany may introduce conscription for all 18-year-olds
The Telegraph ^ | 11 May 2024 | Jörg Luyken

Germany is considering introducing conscription for all 18-year-olds, as it looks to boost its troop numbers in the face of Russian military aggression.

Military planners in Berlin are in the final stages of discussing three options, two of which involve a form of conscription, according to leaked plans reported in the German media.

Boris Pistorius, the defence minister, is set to go public with the official plans by June.

In one of the options being discussed, Germany would bring back a compulsory military year for young men once they turn 18, which was suspended in 2011, and apply it to women as well. This would require a change to the German constitution, but is seen inside the ministry as most likely to receive societal approval.

Another option would only apply to 18-year-old men, but would not see everyone selected. They would be required to fill in an online form and could then be chosen for service, according to details leaked to Die Welt newspaper. This is seen by the defence ministry as “a strong signal” to both allies and rivals.

The third option would avoid compulsory service, focusing instead on “optimising” the current system by engaging in more proactive recruitment campaigns.

However, Mr Pistorious is believed to be against that route. During a trip to Washington this week, he said: “I’m convinced that Germany needs a form of military conscription.”

A rhetorical question meant to boost morale as in “don’t ever give up”. Made famous in the documentary “Animal House”.

I quit the sarcasm tag long ago. People familiar with my postings have pretty much figured out what’s what.

Against who? Nothing but an idiot neocon actually believes Russia intends to invade Germany. Russia preferred to conduct trade and sell them food, gas and oil.
And the Russian Army has hovered around 10% of the size of the Fulda Gap days.

This is just virtue signaling and silly preening from the globalist oligarchy. France and England are talking big, so the Germs can’t possibly be seen as doing less.

It’s comical. Germans trying to act like a menace.

There are literally two T-34s on pedestals in front of the Brandenburg Gate to this day. Should remind them of what happened last time.

This won’t end well.

To have an effective military you will need to install an enormous amount of pride in your country, which results in nationalism. And you will have an enemy to create propaganda.

I have seen this story before.

Obviously dozens of at risk countries see a very real and dangerous threat that you can’t see, but that does make you extremely angry at them.

No, it makes me laugh at them. It only makes me mad to the extent America will get the bill.

And they don’t see risk. They see money... lot’s and lot’s of American money.

why didn’t your story play out when the Bundeswehr was at this stage?

“the Bundeswehr had 12 Army divisions with 36 brigades and far more than 7,000 battle tanks, armoured infantry fighting vehicles and other tanks; 15 flying combat units in the Air Force and the Navy with some 1,000 combat aircraft; 18 surface-to-air-missile battalions, and naval units with around 40 missile boats and 24 submarines, as well as several destroyers and frigates. Its material and personnel contribution even just to NATO’s land forces and integrated air defence in Central Europe amounted to around 50 percent. This meant that, during the Cold War, by the 1970s, the Bundeswehr had already become the largest Western European armed forces after the United States armed forces in Europe – far ahead of the British and even the French armed forces. In peacetime, the Bundeswehr had 495,000 military personnel. In a war, it would have had access to 1.3 million military personnel by calling up reservists.”

Raising military budgets and imposing a draft are costly both in money and domestic politics, they and dozens of other at risk European nations are seeing what you cannot see.

Give up politically correct option 1 and drafting women as well as men. Women are not a fighting force. Go with 2 and just draft 18 year old men and allow women to volunteer for non combat positions. That should fill any holes in recruitment.

"""""the Russian Army has hovered around 10% of the size of the Fulda Gap days.""""" "How many soldiers does Russia have? Russian Armed Forces had 3.57 million troops as of 2024, with 37 percent of them, or 1.32 million, being active military personnel."

The Russian Army is getting fairly close to its Cold War days, and getting larger as it fights its European invasions.

Germany's horses have politely asked to be excluded this time.

Yeah but the Soviets were probably better trained. And they had more weapons back then.

All the Russian elite troops were killed on day one in Kyiv.

They have some drones from Iran so that's helping them. But the Ukrainians got their own drones as well.

It’s also impoverishing a country that possesses a mere fraction of the financial wherewithal of the former USSR.

His rates are at 16% and the ruble is off 70% vs USD since his last invasion and 50% since June 2022.

If they’re not buying lots and lots, and lots, of spare parts to make their tiny existing forces capable of moving under their own power, they’re just *icking around.
