Agreed, And neither were the Radical Republicans who, like you, thought Lincoln was too soft.
Yes, he was weak. And Stanton took advantage of that.. to the point of getting Gen. Halleck to try to take over Gen. Sherman’s command in NC during the negotiations of surrender with CSA Gen. Johnston. Stanton was a liar when it came to Lincoln— and many think he, as Sec. of War, set up the killers network (why, for instance there was the one bridge across the Potomac that was left open for Booth to escape, and several other incriminating facts of Stantons actions).
Sherman was supported by Grant to give the same terms of surrender given to Lee by Grant. But the politicians of Radicals got hold of this, and as documented in Sherman’s memoirs they tried to steal his troops from his command- to continue slaughtering burning and pillaging in NC and Southern Virginia— to follow up on the escaping CSA cabinet. It was Grant who called off Gen. Wilson’s dogs pursuing Davis in GA— to make him aware of the evil he was unleashing. Davis- as Architect of the Capitol was known to loyal Unionists... but hated by Radical thieves and their plans.
Lincoln would have “let em down easy” as he told Grant. A true negotiator and shrewd leader- much better for the South than what happened after. Political murder of Lincoln imho.
Where the Radical were for the Union, I agree with them. Where they were Whigs, I could not disagree more.
A great book on this subject— is British historian B.H. Liddell Hart’s “Sherman: Soldier, Realist, American”.
The last chapter, dealing with Sherman’s negotiations with Gen. Johnston, describes well researched, the actions of Stanton in response to Sherman, who was talking with Johnston and CSA Sec. of War Breckenridge- Davis and Cabinet were still escaping and in Greensboro, NC on the way to GA. This was contemporaneous with Lincoln’s murder—with the political upheaval that brought. Upheaval which Grant’s terms to Lee did not have- as Lincoln was still alive and supported Grant fully- Grant acting on Lincoln’s instructions. Not so with Sherman who communicated with Grant and acted under his direction.Stanton and the Radicals now had Lincoln out of the way and a weak VP (who missed conviction on impeachement by 1 vote btw) Johnson. Stanton was pulling a fast one- along with the nobody Gen. Halleck. Grant’s memoirs register he was appalled as them trying to take over his junior general’s troops. But that is what they tried. All that followed with Reconstruction was the work of these crazy Radicals (who much resemble today’s Leftist demonrats- ironically).
I’m not in favor of honoring people who take up arms against the United States. It’s ok with me to change the confederate place names. I don’t see how it’s any different than naming a school after a BLM leader. (But I’m sure someone here will school me.)
What do you think of Jeff Shaara’s take on Sherman?
I’ve listened to his four-volume work on the western theatre a good number of times, which led me to have much more appreciation for Sherman than I had had before.
Sherman is one of my political hero’s. “ I was always an ally of Southern rights, but and enemy of Southern wrongs.”
If you admire Sherman, the four volumes by Shaara that follow him among others—especially him in the final two—paint a picture of a man who was an outstanding lieutenant to Grant, but never meant to be president.
He likely would share your eagerness to hang Calhoun. Grant and Lincoln, not so much.
Haven’t delved into Shaara’s work past Last Full Measure. No time. He has covered other wars, and conflicts. Not read the Western Theatre. A friend was highly impressed in the Western Theatre (one often overlooked vs. the East Coast), with the terrible loss of Major-Gen Patrick Cleburne in the Battle of Franklin. A battle which killed 6 important generals under Gen. Hood (who was by that time minus his right arm use, and his right leg amputated with a prosthesis that he had to be strapped into his saddle. And hooked on opium for the pain of all this). Cleburne’s story I believe is covered by Shaara- will have to look.
B.H. Liddell Hart’s Sherman was published in 1929 and the language used is, well, verbose to being sometimes difficult to read with old style English writing and phrases. But, it is thorough and one learns a lot about Sherman, the man and his relationship to Grant as well as military tactical genius. Georgia family of course spit on his name living as they did in the wake of his wasting of the State.
That was well said. Meanwhile, we have revealed on this thread (as on so many others on this site nowadays) those who have no understanding of the world in which they live or the identity and the nature of the enemies of our liberty. For the most part, I ascribe this to the fact that so many self-identifying "conservatives" really do live up to the stereotype of being, let's face it, not too terribly bright.
“Don’t forget Lincoln ordered the imprisonment of the entire Maryland Legislature to prevent a vote on Secession of Maryland from the Union.”
Not quite the case. In a special session of the Maryland Legislature held April 1861 the vote was 53 to remain in the Union and 13 to secede from the Union. The next regular session of the Maryland Legislature met September 1861. It was at this time about 1/3 of the legislators were arrested by Federal authorities.
CBS Mornings were so triggered I think they left the set.
Taking up arms against a duly government in order to preserve an economic system based on the use of slave labor are the ideals of our Republic?
No shit. The Nazi’s kinda had the same philosophy. The Confederacy and the Nazis were leftists.
After causing the deaths of 700,000 Americans.
Honestly how in the Hell do you people sqaure yourselves by calling yourself conservative Republicans all the time wailing a Greek Chorus for a bunch of treasonous Southern Democrats?
Oh BS - the states seceded and Lincoln’s Nazi regime attacked first to bring the states back in line.
Go read some history beyond what you’ve learned in your AntiFa courses in the street.
Same result— one cannot know how the 1/3 would have voted since they were detained. This was a highly illegal act to arrest state legislators. You know this and argue minutiae of a vote... not addressing the illegality of the act. Not in time of war, mind you. Prelude to Secession by State.
Bull freaking crap. First of all, you are s jerk for comparing Americans to Nazis.secondd, the little band of SC Traitors fired on FT Sumter first. And don’t use that Antifa crap once. I’m a John Birch Society Conservative.
ooo - scored two hits with one troll!
You are the troll. Meanwhile, I think that the news media commies should be droped out of Helocopters. I love the United States.
