New feature:

By Doug H, Updated March 7, 2024 4 Comments

Uber now has a feature that allows minors to take an Uber ride without being accompanied by an adult.

With Uber Teen, teens aged 13–17 can request a ride from their own Uber account and ride alone—but only after a parent or guardian adds them to a family profile.

Parents and guardians get real-time ride updates and teens have access to several safety features, like PIN verification and in-ride audio recording.

Prior to Uber Teen, unaccompanied minors were not allowed to use Uber under any circumstances.

“. I think only a perv would have that line of thought so you guys who are dissing the driver sound a little pervy yourselves. My mind just doesn’t wallow in the gutter like that.”

Nobody is dissing the driver. Your focus on pervs on this site is a little pervy!

Why are so defensive?

“Yet, neither service ever asked for my age when I signed up.”

I Don’t remember what I did when I signed up.

Did you give a credit card number?

New policy requires photos of ID and holding ID close.

“You can’t own another person.”

“I own you”:

Meaning: The phrase “I own you” carries a completely different connotation. It suggests that the speaker has control or dominance over another person [3]. It can be used metaphorically to imply ownership or possession of someone, often in a negative or controlling manner.

Example: In a threatening or manipulative context, someone might say, “I own you, and you will do as I say.”
Key points:

Implies a sense of control or dominance over another person.
Can be used in a negative or manipulative context.

I never had to do this either. Maybe because I signed up before it was policy.

Anyways, one driver divulged to me that I'm a "high rated" passenger. Probably because I never cause any drama and always tip.

I did have to Google their minor policy. It seemed strange as many Gen-X and older generations could remember being able to hail a taxi as kids without any issues. Even today in California, minors are permitted unaccompanied access to the public buses and trolleys. Not only can they ride them, these services are free for school children ("free" of course meaning the taxpayers pick up the tab).

Yes, I did have to put a CC on file. I've never paid any other way. I don't think they even accept cash (which is why I'm always surprised when these drivers get robbed. Criminals aren't very smart).

“There is, always, more to the story.”

Most here ALWAYS believe what the media tells them, rather than thinking they’re getting PLAYED by their ‘trusted’ media. I’ve been screamed at many times by simply voicing skepticism at articles that are CLEARLY designed to evoke an emotional response from the reader, ESPECIALLY when the response supports a TOP DEMOCRAT OBJECTIVE - like getting rid of private ownership of guns.

Perhaps knowing the OTHER SIDE of thius story will WAKE UP some of those people to NEVER trust the media...many of those same people never trust the Republicans, but simply default to trusting a media that literally HATES THEM.

Doesn’t look like policy was followed in either case.

Uber's policy for minor accounts is that they be linked to the account of their parent or guardian. This essentially means that the parent is authorizing their child to use Uber. There is no reason to assume the Uber drivers were not following policy.

“Yes, as I posted above, it is company policy to not drive unaccompanied minors.”

Generally, yes:

https://help.uber.com/driving-and-delivering/article/uber-rider-age-requirements

But they do allow it in some places:

“This essentially means that the parent is authorizing their child to use Uber. There is no reason to assume the Uber drivers were not following policy.”

Here is some useful info on these “teen” accounts:

https://www.uber.com/us/en/drive/services/teens/

Teen accounts have spefic features. Drivers are notified in advance to expect that the passenger is a (minor) teen:

“Look out for Uber • Teen
For example, to help you easily identify teen rides, your offer card may read ‘UberX • Teen.’ If you see this, it means the trip request is from an official teen account holder—so there should be no surprises at pickup.”

And parents are notified about the status of their child’s Uber ride:

“Guardians will also have access to live trip tracking and will receive status updates for every trip their teen requests. They’ll also be able to contact you directly during the trip.”

The girl in this case was 13. It does not appear that she used a teen account because the father was completely unaware. The drivers should both have rejected her as a passenger because she is clearly a minor who is not using an authorized account.
