House blocks Greene’s resolution to oust Johnson
The Hill ^ | 05/08/24 5:49 PM ET | BY MYCHAEL SCHNELL

The House on Wednesday overwhelmingly voted to protect Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) from a conservative coup, torpedoing an effort by Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) to oust the GOP leader from the top job.

The chamber voted 359-43-7 on a motion to table Greene’s motion to vacate, preventing the removal resolution from hitting the floor for a vote.

The final vote — which was widely expected amid bipartisan opposition to the ouster gambit — deals a major blow to Greene, who filed her measure more than a month ago and had threatened to trigger it ever since.

It means Johnson, who won the gavel in October following the ouster of former Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.), will remain in the top job. But the vote puts him in the precarious position of being a GOP Speaker propped up by Democrats, which could earn him the ire of conservatives.

In brief remarks delivered shortly after Wednesday’s vote, Johnson thanked his colleagues for their support.

“I appreciate the show of confidence from my colleagues to defeat this misguided effort,” he said. “That is certainly what it was.”

I absolutely love Marjorie Taylor Greene. She’s got Spirit, she’s got Fight, and I believe she’ll be around, and on our side, for a long time to come.

However, right now, Republicans have to be fighting the Radical Left Democrats, and all the Damage they have done to our Country.

With a Majority of One, shortly growing to three or four, we’re not in a position of voting on a Motion to Vacate.

At some point, we may very well be, but this is not the time. We are leading in the Presidential Polls by a lot, both Nationally and in the Swing States.

Likewise, we are doing well in the Senate, and I believe will do well in the House.

But if we show DISUNITY, which will be portrayed as CHAOS, it will negatively affect everything!

Mike Johnson is a good man who is trying very hard. I also wish certain things were done over the last period of two months, but we will get them done, together. It is my request that Republicans vote for “THE MOTION TO TABLE.” We WILL WIN BIG - AND IT WILL BE SOON!

President Donald J. Trump~

196 Republicans voted in favour of tabling Greene’s motion to vacate. 11 Republicans voted against. This was a major smackdown of Greene and her supporters .

I have to disagree with President Trump’s evaluation of Mike Johnson. He is beholden to the Democrats.

When he became Speaker, many people talked of his strong conservative record and conservative values. The liberals were worried about his becoming speaker.

Does Johnson have the juice to preserve for Israel the military supply solicitude from the United States that Biden obtained through Johnson’s heavy lifting (arguably:Swimming against the tide) from a reluctant House Republican caucus?

Of course they did.

I’m just surprised that there appear to be at least 43 of them that aren’t full fledged Uniparty Establishmentarians.

And rightly so... We would be absolute fing morons to do it right now! Trump also said exactly that. It’s an election year that needs unity to succeed, we have a one vote majority, not 25+, our efforts should mainly be directed at defeating Democrats & leftists & more than disappointment with a policy needs to be taken into account. We need larger majorities with breathing room in order to do things like this. To throw out Speaker Johnson might feel good as a revenge for last minute funding for other nations, but we would be unuformally screwed with a Democrat Speaker that would take over 🙄

I’m at the point where I don’t care who the Speaker is.

I'm in my fifties, and I've heard this same mantras almost every election. Hold you nose and vote Republicans because Democrats are worse. If we don't get enough Republicans elected we can't control policy. And on and on.

It's like battered-wife syndrome and we can't enough of the backstabbing, two-faced behavior, and downright lack of desire to do the right thing. The reason we are in the current predicament, is that we didn't stand on principle and we didn't fight. The last time that really happened is when Newt ran the House.

Marjorie has further exposed the RINO's, and some want to criticize her. Yet those same people will hold their nose to vote for a RINO and perpetuate the problem.

All you guys complaining on this thread will still walk through muh broken glass to vote for these same worthless Republicans, and then complain and donate to their legal fund when Dems screw them out of their races again.

If you read Trump’s quote, nowhere does he express support for Mike Johnson. He just says that this is the wrong time to kick him out. And even insinuates that that time may come. Mike Johnson should be taking this as a shot across the bow.
