Is Doug Burgum the dark horse in the Trump VP race? After Kristi Noem killed her dog, Republicans consider the North Dakota billionaire and his wife's inspirational story of recovery

When former President Donald Trump welcomes potential running mates to Mar-a-Lago this weekend a dark horse could emerge as a favorite.

One-time frontrunner, South Dakota governor Kristi Noem, is all but out of contention following revelations she shot dead her 14-month-old dog Cricket.

Other candidates - including U.S. Senators Marco Rubio, Tim Scott and J.D. Vance; and congresswoman Elise Stefanik - are also set to attend.

But whispers are circulating about a lesser-known Republican who 18 months ago was little heard of outside his remote home state.

He is a billionaire businessman surrounded by a loving family and has the support of a wife who has her own inspirational back story overcoming drug and alcohol addiction.

Enter Doug Burgum, Governor of North Dakota.

One reason for the so-called 'Burgum buzz' among Republicans is his uptick of Fox News appearances.

Burgum is now a frequent guest on the network as he navigates the delicate cable news dance to attract Trump's favor.

The governor from the rural state was brought on the network on Monday to discuss the pressing issue of pro-Palestine protests that continued raging at some of America's most elite colleges.

As an undergraduate of North Dakota State University, Burgum is not an expert on Ivy League schools or a policy guru on the political sensitivities of Israel and Palestine.

But he does have some thoughts to share about former President Donald Trump, and President Joe Biden.

'If President Trump was in office right now and we were leading through strength abroad, we would not be seeing this on our campuses today,' he said, laying blame for the college protests 'all at the feet of Joe Biden.'

I haven't done too much research on Byron Donald but I do like a lot of what I heard from him. I don't hear his name come up much in this conversation. Rubio has no chance. What do conservatives think of Byron Donald?

A RINO Republican who looks like Dracula, too, is not the best option, for VP! Pick an actual MAGA Republican, to become VP!

Mike Huckabee

Mike's a nice Conservative Christian, but I couldn't vote for Mike, even if I took 3 relaxium before I went to the polls.

The Daily Mail obviously wanted Noem out of the race. They achieved that result.

Dittos!

I Like J.D. Vance. All the things Trmp isn’t. Raised in horrible poverty in crazy family, pulled himself together, college scholarship, married to a lovely woman from India that he met in law school. She and the children are not quite white skinned, which, in itself would attract a lot of voters.

You might think he’s too young, but really a good, energetic contrast to both presidential candidates. Great speaker too.

Wrote book “Hillbilly Elegey” that a surprising number of people read or saw as movie on Netflix, including a mother and son I ran into when I was in Emergency Room waiting to see doctor.

Wrong. I wish people on here would stop yapping about how they don’t understand what a natural born citizen is. It’s getting old.

What is this "Fox News" mentioned in the article?

She's a fighter, knows her stuff and knows what she'd be in for. That's for certain.

A fighter, knows his stuff, seems to be a "happy warrior" kind of guy and would certainly take the fight to the D's.

Youngkin would probably be OK

That word "probably" makes him a NO in my book. Seems kinda wishy-washy too.

I like it. Burgum is independently wealthy and doesn’t appear to be part of the uniparty network. Maybe because North Dakota has a small population and is deemed not important enough by party bigwigs, someone like Burgun can rise to the governorship. Now at some point we need to figure out how to reform the system so that capable and independent patriotic conservatives can be elected to positions of power, without being independently wealthy. But that hasn’t happened yet. In the meantime, someone like Burgum might be the best choice to carry on Trump’s legacy after Trump’s second term.

Nope, just my speculation. But when he was campaigning earlier in the year one criticism that I read (from a conservative commentator) was that due to his career background, he was too cozy with the majority-liberal tech community based out of the Bay Area, Seattle, Austin, etc.

He seems to be a tech-friendly, pro-business, oil/gas/mineral-friendly, anti-China politician. Those were the issues he was highlighting when I got mailings from his campaign. He’s not a culture warrior. But then again, neither is Trump.

I like Flynn. The media was freak out, but screw ‘em. Absolutely no senator though, please. Senators are just lousy. Something about being in the Senate corrupts these guys thoroughly.

I agree with you. The dog story is all about emotions and not the reality of getting rid of a dangerous animal. Dangerous animals are put down all the time, it’s just that this story is blown out of proportion by the left and unfortunately many on the right are falling for it.

Noem is a farm/ranch girl. Rural people put down all sorts of animals all the time. I suspect she simply was not aware of the emotional impact that would surge from the left over this.

If that’s all they can find against her, I think she’d be OK.

Yes to Donald’s. I understand he was at the Mar a Lago meeting this weekend with other possibles so he’s still in the running. He can hold his own in any forum, supports and agrees with Trump on the issues, and would increase our share of the black vote.

I hear more worried people on the right cite the dog business, mainly how it would play to Americans.
The core reality is that she put down a dangerous animal to guarantee her family’s safety.
That is the relevant point that resonates.
