I know the mineral resources of Niger. In a previous life I was a mining engineer and mineralogist who worked all over the world.

We COULD mine our own if the politicians and ‘ecologists’ would allow it.

But failing that, if we really need it, why don’t we just buy it? Cheaper and more moral than sending troops to try to control the nation. Even if we have to bid against the Chinese and Russians for it, it would still be cheaper.

But why am I even discussing this with someone who just loves military expeditionism?

Don’t know if it’s true or not, most likely not, but there’s a local rumor that we are running a gold mine on that base and stealing gold from them. The Russians will clear that up soon enough. Too late for us regardless.

Actually, I believe the base with the rumored gold mine is elsewhere in the country and runs the drone ops, not the subject one in Niamey with the airport.
