When I was a kid living in Brooklyn, on Saturdays my father would hang out at the barbershop with Mike the Barber and some of his buddies. People would wander in, words and money were exchanged and that was about it. They would watch games on a little black and white tv. The funny part is the only people I ever saw getting haircuts were my father and his friends. Once a month, my father would take me there for a haircut. Funny thing was every time I took a haircut, someone higher up would take a bag out of the cabinet and leave. A few minutes later a local police officer would show up, look around, say hello and leave.
Sundays were Dubrows on Kings Highway. Same group of guys, different bookie. I would go there after hockey and sit with them while they ate and talked sports. Most common thing I heard from that group was, “Jets/Giants parlay 10x.” Took me a long time to figure that out.
