Chinese leader Xi Jinping’s relationship with Russian President Vladimir Putin is tarnished as a result of Russia’s unprovoked invasion and occupation of Ukraine. Xi has been distancing China from Putin’s predations gradually — out of deference to his two biggest customers, the United States and European Union.
But on Sept. 15 his displeasure about the war became public. Putin himself admitted at a press conference following a meeting with Xi that China had “concerns” about his war in Ukraine. So did India.
But there is one more elephant in the room: Siberia, a region bigger and richer than any place on Earth, with resources that underpin Putin’s economy. It is Asian, not European, and one day will mostly fall into China’s hands. Xi knows this and needn’t lift a finger to speed along this outcome. To some, a Chinese takeover of Siberia may seem preposterous. But Putin’s flailing war against the West increases the odds that the Russian Federation itself may atomize.

Once Putin broke international law, political convention, diplomatic protocol and the post-WWII detente he became a pariah. Now jackals will have him.
They should go at it like it’s 1969. If so should we encourage it? Fallout and collateral damage to our allies. A destroyed Europe was good for American business post WW2. Kinda like arming Saddam to fight the Ayatollas.
I’m getting tired of the costs of defending our friends and keeping the sea lanes open. A big one would settle it.
This is an opinion piece that talks about Russia disintegrating because its losing the Ukraine War and ultimately, Russia will fall apart and China will get Siberia. Lots and lots of assumptions with little stated basis. It sounds like a Neo-Con fantasy. Russia falls apart and now we get to go into World War III with China.
China might have designs on Siberia but, if there is one region in the world that the Russians will have to hesitation to use nuclear weapons on, it is on their own territory in Siberia. They will green glass any ChiComs that go into Siberia.
The article is 18 months old. Not much change. I read where Siberia would prefer an association with the US. Knowing both the Russians and Chicoms will have that effect. I’d say reopen the gulags and dump our debris there. Plenty of free land available.
