The departure of Rep. Mike Gallagher shaves off yet another Republican from the already razor-thin GOP House majority, further weakening the GOP's already loose grip on power.
With Gallagher's resignation, House Republicans can only afford to lose a single Republican vote to get legislation passed along party lines.
If they lose more than a single GOP vote, Republicans will need Democrat support to pass any legislation.
As it stands, there are 217 Republicans and 213 Democrats and five vacancies in the House.
This means if two Republicans vote with Democrats the vote would be 215 - 215, and a tie results in a loss for any measure.
Further complicating the matter is the Thursday announcement from Rep. Jake LaTurner, R-Kan., that he will not seek re-election this fall.
'It is time to pursue other opportunities and have the benefit of spending more time with my family,' LaTurner wrote in his announcement.
He said the 'dysfunction' of the current House of Representatives is 'distressing,' an apparent nod at the chaos that may have prompted so many members to seek employment outside of Capitol Hill this cycle.

We’re pretty much already there.
I don’t understand what’s going on with these resignations...
Rep. Jake LaTurner, R-Kan
Does have a young family.
No worries. They will turn over control willingly just like Ryan did. That is the natural order of things in DC. The GOP is far more comfortable in the minority. They do not have the ability to actually lead. If a leader does arise, they do the bet to destroy them. I really have no respect for most of the GOP. They are selling out the country about as fast as the democrats.
Republicans in general and conservatives in particular are on life support now.
I don’t either, but if we are allowed to speculate, I would bet that the Deep State has a hand in it...
How strange so many of our people would resign at this critical moment in our history. It’s as strange as the timing on the lawfare cases against Trump.
Almost feels like there’s a force behind the madness. Something intentional...
IMH0 they are getting offers they can’t refuse. Blackmail or $
With a couple of them, it may be as simple as getting them new jobs. Paul Ryan is making millions working at the board over at Fox News.
The Deep State only needed to poach five Republicans.
Other than helping the Democrats, there is no logical explanation for leaving immediately versus announcing your are not running again but serving out your term, considering it’s barely 6 months away. The maddening thing is, he’s probably not leaving Washington, he’s been bought off by some lobbying firm and will take a lucrative job early next year.
They get everything they want now!
Tucker Carlson said Republicans are cooperating out of fear that the agencies will hit them with Kiddie Porn charges.
The Dems make the rules and fund every crazy thing you can dream of now. No difference than the Trained Seals inviting Vindman into Congress and treating him like a God now.
They only make $174,000. Matt Gaetz’s parents are wealthy so it appears they can’t buy him off or blackmail him. Same deal with Trump.
Tough choice for some of them pols.
All by design.
It’s a problem if they lose control. They can’t truly enact anything without democrats anyway, because Biden and the senate have to go along.
The Republicans resigning early are scum.
Or it could be due what Poso calls getting “Brownstoned.”
Rather than blackmailing following an actual incident, a politician may get drugged or medicated at some social event. Then pictures taken of them in some sort of “compromising” activity.... The contrived evidence is then used as leverage.
I think the label “Brownstone” came from some British situation that occurred, not sure.
You never see demoncraps resigning. But, Rs and a reliable Conservative vote with an impure background, herr aus!
If you think about it and see how so many republicans vote in Congress you will realize that they are really democrats who ran as republicans to win in red districts. That was and is happening for decades and that is why conservative republicans never really accomplished anything — their party members were really democrats. Same is true for good ole Bushie.
“I don’t understand what’s going on with these resignations...”
Bought off. A few million is not much for the deep state but a lot for these little demented opportunists.
