Chinese hackers are preparing to launch a major attack on critical U.S. infrastructure and have already infiltrated multiple companies according to the FBI.
FBI Director Chris Wray revealed today China is developing the capability to cause significant damage to our critical infrastructure at a time of their choosing. The only question is the time to launch a catastrophic blow.
“China is developing the ability to physically wreak havoc on our critical infrastructure at a time of its choosing,” Wray said at the 2024 Vanderbilt Summit on Modern Conflict and Emerging Threats. “Its plan is to land low blows against civilian infrastructure to try to induce panic.”
According to Wray, an ongoing Chinese hacking campaign known as Volt Typhoon has successfully infiltrated several American companies in telecommunications, energy, water, and other critical sectors. 23 pipeline operators are being targeted.
According to Reuters, Wray went on to note that China’s hackers operated a series of botnets, which are constellations of compromised personal computers and servers around the globe to hide their nefarious cyber actions. Private sector American technology and cybersecurity companies previously attributed Volt Typhoon to China, including reports by security researchers with Microsoft and Google.
Reuters reports that a Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson claimed the Volt Typhoon was unrelated to China’s government but is a criminal ransomware group.
China’s Embassy in Washington released the following statement in response to the MFA spokesperson’s comment.

For years now the Chinese college “students” have been sending university/corporation and research places’ PINs and passwords and facsimile email and website pages to China.
An IT friend at one of my two universities said dozens of Chinese hacking attempts a day were tried against our innocuous places like my library. Constant pressure. The real research universities like my old one had extensive satellite imaging research work and other interesting targets for China. Also hacked a lot by Chinese.
The FIB must have recruited some Chinese and provided them with the resources to attack.
With all the talk about faceoffs resulting in WWIII the infrastructure destruction by China here will also be a trigger.
You can’t laugh off ending sewage treatment for a city or two. It would result in disease and death.
Same with shutoff of clean water. No place for human waste for days.
And end of cell phones and internet. Heat off in winter with no electricity. No air conditioning in summer in sealed tall buildings.
Hacking is dangerous.
That to me would mean an act of war by China and we would have to fight the rotten bastards.

You do realized, don't you, that China's #1 target is probably banks and investment firms? I would not be in a hurry for that to happen.

If the entire nation is dark, all digital networks are hard down (no information), cartels are laying siege to LE and their families to keep them from keeping order, interstate travel is impossible because of lack of fuel and MS-13 "checkpoints", the nation is blanketed with satellite-based radio jamming so that not even HAMs can make contact beyond their neighborhoods...nothing will matter except surving another day.
