Katherine Maher: The number one challenge here that we see is, of course, the First Amendment in the United States... is a fairly robust protection of rights, and that is a protection of rights, both for platforms, which I actually think is very important. The platforms have those rights to regulate what kind of content they want on their sites, but it also means it is a little bit tricky to really address some of the real challenges of 'where does bad information come from?' and some of the influence peddlers who have made a real market economy around it.

I don’t ever remember NPR being middle of the road.

It was "not obviously liberal" in the late 1970s, before the Reagan administration.

Reagan made an attempt to zero them out in the mid-80s, and they went completely berzerk.

They had already gone very left-wing by that time though.

When I say "not obviously liberal," I mean in the same sense that the Big 3 TV networks were "not obviously liberal" back in the 1960s. They pushed left-wing causes, but in a subtle way. They had to be subtle because of the "fairness doctrine."
