Amid concerns about American shipbuilding, the US Navy's top civilian official said this week that he was "floored" by a Pacific ally's capabilities in this space.
The Navy secretary's comments came on the heels of an internal review that discovered that most of the Navy's top programs, including high-priority submarines, a first-in-class guided-missile frigate, and the third Ford-class aircraft carrier, are severely delayed by years, fueling worries from US officials about the ability to maintain our pace against great power rivals. During his keynote speech at the Navy League's Sea Air Space conference this week, Secretary of the Navy Carlos Del Toro said his recent trip to South Korea had left him impressed by their shipbuilding.
"When my team and I went to South Korea, we were floored at the level of digitization and real-time monitoring of shipbuilding progress, with readily available information down to individual pieces of stock materials," Del Toro said.
"Their top executives could tell us to the day when ships would be delivered," he said. That's a stark difference from the US, which is facing problems with its shipbuilding capacity, labor availability, and resources.
Back in January, Del Toro ordered a 45-day review to assess the progress of the Navy's top shipbuilding programs, which found that most were delayed. After the review's findings were made public, Del Toro ordered a follow-up review into solutions for the delays.

add: lack of shipyard, lack of basic steel making skills.
The answer is obviously more money, more graft, and more Union involvement. That’ll work...
Right?
THAT discovery by the Secretary has to be discouraging but I’m sure he knows just what the problem is...and who/what is to blame. He is a former Naval officer - Commander - and probably he saw things that were a lot different than they are today...There have to be many who are serving in all the branches today who are equally as disappointed. Some could say, “It’s not my father’s Navy” and that’s a real pity!
ALSO BAD FOR OUR COUNTRY.....
HIRE WITH DEI STANDARDS-—
NEVER WILL KNOW WHAT IS GOING ON.
“”What we did in WWII, when it came to war-time production, will never be reproduced here again.””
You speak the truth!!!!
THAT is with non-Union labor (aka; productive people not extortion tools).
“US procurement money pays for the process of procurement, not delivering working weapons systems”
That’s the point. The production of a working “system” is ancillary, almost incidental. What’s important is that the process was completed without anything that a jerk like John Conyers could throw rocks at in a Congressional hearing.
Don’t blame the companies. They do what they’re told. And that’s the system. As mandated by dumbthugs elected by drooling halfwits.
Yes,, South Korea has not been able to go soft, they actaully have a live, operating existential military threat on their border. While the U.S. DOD since Obama has gone soft and wobbly, fat and happy with a Congress that demands no accountability.
And I doubt that they have Affirmative Action also.
But the Powers That Be knew what the end result of such Programs as Affirmative Action, DEI would bring once they worked their poison[s]. We are now reaping the results of said Programs. And Policies.
China, South korea and Japan and are the largest three shipbuilders today. The U.S. gave up any ship building race long ago. If your nation is not big in shipbuilding period, how does your military ship building stay ahead? It doesn’t.
This was the same 20th century where we were able to build ships faster than the U-boats could sink them. For most of the 20th century we (America) knew how to get things done.
Consider that it took less than 10 years from Kennedy’s words to a man on the moon in the 60s. And how long is the timeline for a moon landing now?

Go to Home Depot or Lowe’s. What the U.S. excels at producing are legions of young non-English-speaking Hispanic males strutting the muscle physique they built at the local air conditioned gym. They are in the stores to try to start fights with 76-year-old white guys. Makes the Aztecans feel real powerful.

are severely delayed by the government's idiotic obsession with diversity in place of intelligence, experience, ability, competency and work ethic.
LIVES WILL BE LOST AS A RESULT!
China and Russia will target those shipyards should anything happen. But North Korea would also be moving in such a scenario.
They just had an election and their Leftists took significant power. Give them a little time.
Russia has a larger shipbuilding capacity than us ATM. And they’re expanding their shipbuilding capacity.
Carlos just said he has no clue about his job ?
When you ship your industrial base overseas you not only lose the infrastructure but you lose the skilled workers.
They won’t be coming back soon... or ever.
