Ron DeSantis hosts donors at South Florida casino with an eye toward what's next. The idea of running for president again in 2028 did not come up directly, but attendees said you could "read between the lines."

I know you live in deep blue Pennsylvania. You’ll never live in a beautiful red state.

[LOL, so says a rabid Freeper. Name one POTUS whose policies were as successful as Trump’s in the four short years he managed the Country’s borders, economy and foreign policy? Name one!]

That would be every Republican president. Trump’s not exceptional apart from his potty mouth and his drug dealer amnesty.

If DeSantis, or others like him, are the future of the Republican party, then God help us. The system churns out candidates like DeSantis as a matter of routine, and always has. Every one of them has a public face that hides who they are and who they work for. DeSantis is just as dependent on his donors as any other establishment Republican, and he’s just as beholden to them. If he’s “standing up to the establishment”, its because they’ve allowed him to.

We’d been waiting for the system to produce a true leader, for years, and it never happened. And now we’re supposed to believe that the system finally worked and produced a truly independent leader in Ron DeSantis?, a candidate who has somehow figured out how to be independent of the people who allow him to exist, politically? DeSantis has figured out a way to get big donor money and still do whatever he wants? It’s ludicrous on its face. This is why Trump is truly so unique and why so many of us give him leeway on mistakes he may make from time to time. It’s because he’s fundamentally different from the DeSantis’s of the world. He has the freedom, and ability, to act with a degree of independence that DeSantis never will. He’s of a different species. You can’t expect an antelope to behave like a lion. It’s not in its nature.

We’re not always going to have Trump leading the party. Who will emerge after a second Trump term? I don’t know. But if the answer is a return to another establishment candidate, whether it be DeSantis or someone else, then the Trump revolution will have been for naught.

I liked Ron DeSantis’ record as governor and would have been behind him all the way had Trump not decided to run. However, after seeing him as a campaigner, he seems to leave a lot to be desired (much like Scott Walker). Perhaps, it is a blessing that his deficiencies as a campaigner are revealed now. DeSantis can correct them or the Republicans can look in another direction in 2028. 2028 is a long ways away in political time but right now Rand Paul is my favorite to follow Trump into the White House.

[Add energy to Trump’s policy successes.]

Oil projects take years to come to fruition. The oil produced during Trump’s tenure was mostly dug during the Obama administration. This isn’t even primarily a function of government policy. High prices motivate exploration. Low prices depress it. And oil prices have clearly been far lower many decades before Trump.

The Donald is a generic Republican whose sole distinguishing feature is his potty mouth and his knack for blaming his travails on nebulous conspiracies rather than his own wilfullness and incompetence. We are fortunate that his opponent won by a small margin, but has governed like he beat Trump in a landslide. Biden’s extremism is why Trump is likely win the rematch. But Trump’s toddler-level tantrums are why he will likely only squeak out a narrow victory, and maybe even lose the popular vote.

"You first. You hate on conservative politicians constantly."

How imbecile are you so make such a comment? Because I don't care for DeSantis, you make a general remark about my "hating" conservative politicians? Go take your narrow-minded, bigoted attitude, and bother somebody else. You haven't the mental ability to argue any issue successfully. The fact that you think I need to follow lock-step with the likes of you when it comes to supporting phony Conservatives, cracks me up.

“political skills”
Too many have political skills. Too few love America and know how to return her to fiscal solvency and economic health. Worship at the feet of Reagan & JFK. I will measure by results achieved for America & Americans in all walks of life, against overwhelming obstruction and adversity.

https://trumpwhitehouse.archives.gov/trump-administration-accomplishments/

I am not impressed by JFK
A major success of JFK’s vision was the successful moon landing in 1969, even though he didn’t get to see it. Efforts born from the New Frontier led to civil rights legislation, improved public education, and increased federal aid for the elderly and those in poverty. He helped to craft the welfare state & the Peace Corps.

We’ll cross that bridge in the future, right now worrying about a Republican Presidential Nominee in 2028 can only cause more infighting.

I’m not a DeSantis supporter BTW, he’d have to show great improvement as national candidate for me to vote for him in a primary.

If he slugs his way through 2028 primary, wins it, and is facing Newsom in the general.

I’ll vote for DeSantis faster than you can say “President Trump.”
I’m not confident that DeSantis would be a good President, but Newsom must never become President.

I agree that the focus needs to be on 2024. But it’s not too early to give some thought to 2028 and beyond. Hopefully the right way forward will reveal itself.

You say I do, so please give me actual examples for your reasons for saying so. This is crucial, and explain to me why I should agree with you on those you perceive as “true Conservatives,” against Repukes I don’t believe are “true Conservatives.”
