Want more food deserts in San Francisco?
Here's how you get more food deserts in San Francisco.
According to Reason magazine:
The San Francisco Board of Supervisors is considering a remarkable policy that would allow people to sue grocery stores that close too quickly.
Earlier this week, Supervisors Dean Preston and Aaron Peskin introduced an ordinance that, if passed, would require grocery stores to provide six months' written notice to the city before closing down.
Supermarket operators would also have to make "good faith" efforts to ensure the continued availability of groceries at their shuttered location, either through finding a successor store, helping residents form a grocery co-op, or any other plan they might work out by meeting with city and neighborhood residents.
Lest one thinks this is some heavy-handed City Hall intervention, the ordinance makes clear that owners still retain the ultimate power to close their store. It also creates a number of exemptions to the six-month notice requirement. If a store is closing because of a natural disaster or business circumstances that aren't "reasonably foreseeable," it doesn't have to provide the full six months' notice.
For the poor, that's bad news because all it will do is ensure that new grocery stores don't open.
Who'd want to do business in a city that requires six months' notice plus the difficult task of getting a replacement or organizing a food co-op for the 'privilege' of closure when all they want to do is get out?

California logic.
If California was the Titanic, they would vote to cut holes in the other side of the ship “to let the water out”.
the city that took taxes from my business but failed to protect us from looting and rioting?
tell them to go pound sand
When the fug did anyone give azho politicians the right to award the right to sue retailers for shutting down to Randy Resident? Somebody’s ass needs to go to jail. The turd roller bottom tier political lice don’t have that authority. Then the azhos wonder why some nut with a gun goes into these meetings and starts shooting the place up. The Feddies need to get these demented boyz and gurlz under control.
Announce you’re closing in six months.
Stop ordering inventory immediately.
Keep the empty shelved store “open”.
Doors open, lights on, HVAC off, freezers off, employees required to show up.
Any employee who fails to show up for 3 consecutive days without notice can be terminated as “abandoning their position” under existing law...
San Francisco’s old policies are forcing grocery stores to leave.
These new laws are making sure they never come back
Two tiered as usual.
1) organized looters with big trash bags filled with stolen items from a retail store——don’t stop them, don’t hold them for police, don’t have police chase or arrest them.
2) grocery stores lose money and decide they have to close down. Sue them. Put the fear of the law into them.
RE: In the meantime sell the building.
Most of them don’t own the building, they rent them from Real Estate Investment Trusts.
Ha
That would make too much sense for the left wing politicians.
Alerting all business that they need to get out of there before the same happens to them!
I can’t see anything going wrong with this...</S>
Can they change their hours to 5-6am every day (druggies likely to be asleep) and not have anything on the shelves?
Typical of Commiefornia to pass a law as asinine as this.
“Leftists have to hit bottom, or worse, before they will learn.”
I think for many of them, hitting bottom, or worse, is not enough. They are immune both to reason and to reality.
LoL! Didn’t Ayn Rand write in Atlas Shrugged about how the govt passed laws requiring higher minimum wage (but businesses can’t fire employees, raise prices, or go out of business)??
No problem! We’re not closed. We have no merchandise to sell, but we’re open!
Welp, might as well start opening up those government run SNAP stores like they used to have. Inside they have milk, cheese, hamburger meat...chicken and canned vegetables, all with white labels etc.
You can walk in...shop, then swipe you EBT card! Dont have to worry about it closing...and generally speaking, no one is going to run inther thee and do a smash and grab for some gubament cheese.
Actually, you can just not restock shelves....leave the doors open, with one clerk to just stand there. Present an empty store.
“would require grocery stores to provide six months’”
It only takes a day to loot a store bare. Now they’ll have to restock for 6 months.
I believe more than half the country believes government is the answer——they will blindly follow them to their demise.
