Because it federalizes the issue where the federal gov't has no authority.
Winning back morality has to be done on the local and state level, not in DC.
Look at how the nation changed from mostly supporting gun control laws in the 1960s to being against most new gun laws today.
We are winning the argument on abortion as well. Slowly and incrementally....the same way the left has achieved so much.
A national 15 week limit will be a campaign issue for libs who want to make it 26 weeks, then 30 weeks, etc. "Vote for me and we will expand a woman's right to choose" and those weak-minded will vote for them.
Take the issue away from the federal level and make the left fight in 50 state legislatures around the nation.
I will take Lindsey Graham seriously on the abortion issue when he comes out and makes the case that legalized abortion was only adopted in this country as a measure to control the black population. The fact that none of these so-called “strong pro-life” political hacks ever come out and say this exposes them as frauds.
The whole discussion shows how little support even amongst conservatives have for a “strict constructionist” approach to the Constitution. If you want a national abortion ban work for a Constitutional Amendment banning it. Any other approach is a hypocritical as the left’s approach in seeing in the text “textual penumbras” of permission. You can’t campaign for devolving power back to the states then turn around and undermine that with an overarching federal law bringing power back to the federal government.
I’m not disagreeing with the politics of it, but if you’re truly pro-life are you OK with abortions in ANY state or do you think the Constitution provides protection to fetuses regardless of the jurisdiction?
