The Vermont Legislature is advancing legislation requiring big fossil fuel companies pay a share of the damage caused by climate change after the state suffered catastrophic summer flooding and damage from other extreme weather.
“In order to remedy the problems created by washed out roads, downed electrical wires, damaged crops and repeated flooding, the largest fossil fuel entities that have contributed to climate change should also contribute to fixing the problem that they caused,” Sen. Nader Hashim, a Democrat from Windham County, said to Senate colleagues on Friday.
It’s a polluter-pays model affecting companies engaged in the trade or business of extracting fossil fuel or refining crude oil attributable to more than 1 billion metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions during the time period. The funds could be used by the state for such things as upgrading stormwater drainage systems; upgrading roads, bridges and railroads; relocating, elevating or retrofitting sewage treatment plants and making energy efficient weatherization upgrades to public and private buildings.
Hashim, the Democratic senator from Windham County, said the reality is that severe weather patterns are here and will happen more frequently and become more damaging over time. Adapting and becoming more resilient costs money and Vermont has few options to pay for the damage.
“We can place the burden on Vermont taxpayers or we can keep our fingers crossed that the federal government will help us or we can have fossil fuel companies pay their fair share,” he said.

The goose that lays the Golden eggs! Don’t have to prove any damage was actually caused by man’s co2, just claim it happened, arrest anyone that challenges the false claim, and then fine the snot out of every business around, and Ka-ching! Cash comes rolling in
“Global warming ruined my health” kKachina!
“Global warming ruined the paint on my house” ka-ching
“Global warming is causing people to get angry and lash out and hurt others” ka-ching!
Etc etc etc
They don’t have to prove it, they just claim it and that is good enough for the courts to rule agaisnt the big bad oil companies. Look a5 how corrupt the courts have been when trying Trump, and denying cases to show election corruption.
Why not punish the consumers who have used fossil fuels to keep their kids warm in the winter? It would be easy enough for politicians to levy a direct tax on past fossil fuel users and use the police to enforce collections.
Consumers will bear the brunt of punishing legislation either way.
I guess the important thing is to collect as much revenue as possible without the theft being laid directly at the feet of the politicians; preserve the illusion that those bad people over there are responsible.
Let them grow their own food using horses and no fertilizer.
Weave and make their own clothes from whatever they can grow there.
Why?
Plastic parts? PETROLEUM!!!
Transportation to Vermont? PETROLEUM!!!
Production of steel or aluminum? COAL and NATURAL GAS!!!
No ... no bikes for them.
Exactly right, MM.
The very first thing that would happen is Vermont would cut down every single tree for power. It would be a denuded, barren landscape in a short while. That would sure attract the tourists.
And if he wants floods, that would create them.
The idiocy of these people is beyond belief.
Other than the usual climate change garbage, hard not to notice that overused indescribable undefinable word, "fair share".
Vermont used to be a nice place to vacation, back in the mid-60s. It’s since turned into a major dem shithole.
Exactly! No petroleum products will be allowed to be sent into Vermont. Let them ride their skateboards everywhere.
I was thinking of living like little house on prairie, but then again, they used coal, and burned wood.
If these folks want to go totally green, then live in mud huts and eat raw food and no heat for VT winters.
I hate illegal alien refugee politicians.
Not quite but damned close climate change is a long term scam it never ends.
Bonus round: It controls what how and who runs all businesses.
Yep. These are the very same people who railed against dirty, polluting wood stoves. Unheated mud huts, twigs, bark, grubs, and beetles should be good enough for them
Okay fine, now stop selling fuel in the state. I am sure that will make it all better for them.

FR: Never Accept the Premise of Your Opponent’s Argument
Just as “follow the global warming lawsuit money” California cities evidently thought it prudent to not bother prospective investors about their politically correct climate problems (my wording), Virginia is probably trying to follow the climate dollars too imo.
From 2018:
"But ExxonMobil's attorneys did some legwork and found something interesting in municipal bond offerings of many of the same cities and counties suing them. Those offerings include several examples of climate change threats being downplayed or even completely ignored." —Big Oil throws California’s climate change hypocrisy back in its face (1.11.2018)"
If Virginia is trying to find new revenues, it needs to team up with “secessionist” Texas to do so by doing the following. Texas and Verment need to lead ALL the states to effectively “secede” from the unconstitutionally big, tax-hungry federal government by repealing the 16th (16A; direct taxes) and 17th (17A; popular voting for federal senators) Amendments (16&17A).
Consider the repealing of 16&17A as part of reparations for victim taxpayers of the unconstitutionally big federal government for having to pay a lifetime of unconstitutional federal taxes, taxes that Congress cannot reasonably justify under its constitutional Article I, Section 8-limited powers and a few other constitutionally enumerated expenses.
"16th Amendment : The Congress shall have power to lay and collect taxes on incomes, from whatever source derived [emphasis added], without apportionment among the several States, and without regard to any census or enumeration."
"Congress is not empowered to tax for those purposes which are within the exclusive province of the States." —Justice John Marshall, Gibbons v. Ogden, 1824.
“ If the tax be not proposed for the common defence, or general welfare, but for other objects, wholly extraneous, (as for instance, for propagating Mahometanism among the Turks, or giving aids and subsidies to a foreign nation, to build palaces for its kings, or erect monuments to its heroes,) it would be wholly indefensible upon constitutional principles [emphases added].” — Justice Joseph Story, Commentaries on the Constitution 2 (1833).
From the congressional record:
”Simply this, that the care of the property, the liberty, and the life of the citizen, under the solemn sanction of an oath imposed by your Constitution, is in the States and not in the federal government [emphases added]. I have sought to effect no change in that respect in the Constitution of the country.” —John Bingham, Congressional. Globe. 1866, page 1292 (see top half of third column)
“Cherish, therefore, the spirit of our people, and keep alive their attention. If once they become inattentive to the public affairs, you and I, and Congress and Assemblies, judges and governors, shall all become wolves [emphasis added]. It seems to be the law of our general nature.” - Thomas Jefferson (Letter to Edward Carrington January 16, 1787)
Pelosi: "We have to pass the bill so that you can find out what is in it." (non-FR; 6 sec.)

I guess I’ll be buying my fuel in New Hampshire soon.
“Let them ride their skateboards everywhere”
Those skateboards will have to be made out of wood.
Say what? Delusional!
Prove Climate Change.
Just stop sending gas, diesel and heating oil to them. Let the learn first hand how important fossil fuel is.
