Regime corruption, economic collapse and public anger point to trouble ahead
On February 5, Mirtza Ocana, an American citizen of Cuban origin, arrived at Tampa International Airport from Havana and was arrested for attempting to smuggle more than $100,000 into the country. When questioned, Ocana confessed to having carried out 45 similar assignments since May 2023. The smuggling operation involved millions of dollars.
Because Cuba has slipped beneath the attention horizon of the news media, this incident attracted zero interest. Yet it posed a perplexing riddle. Cuba’s communist regime currently faces the most disastrous economic collapse in its long history of such failures. The reasons are many, but most immediately it’s a lack of foreign currency with which to buy food and fuel for the population. The Cuban economy resembles those broken-down cars from the ’50s still found on the streets of Havana: It produces little for internal consumption and almost nothing that can be sold abroad for hard currency.
Why, then, is the island now exporting dollars to the United States?
The search for an answer leads to two radical transformations that have taken place, largely unnoticed, in Cuba. The first concerns the regime, which has given up any revolutionary pretensions and become what ordinary Cubans call a “mafia.” Don’t think of the pushy American racketeers in the style of “Godfather II.” The mafia in Cuba is indistinguishable from the regime itself. The matter is naturally shrouded by fictions and smokescreens, but the godfather may well be the country’s president, Miguel Díaz-Canel.

Oligarchism, until the system resets itself.

The Castros ended up owning something like 80% of Cuba.
And the Castro cancer has metastasized in Canada. (Cubanada?)
The Cuban commies, like every other commie, has no ‘care’ about feeding the people. People are just more pawns in the game of control.
In Nicaragua, before the Sandinista Commies took power, there were thriving farmers markets everywhere. In small towns and large cities, the farmers and ranchers would bring their products to sell and barter. The day after the commies took power, no farmer markets were allowed. All the food became the people’s food, and strict rationing was instituted.
In Cuba, the farmers are not allowed to harvest. They have to wait for the government flunkies to arrive. Crops can sit and rot until someone arrives.
Also in Cuba, no one is allowed to own a boat. Not just because many would leave. All around the island is an ocean teeming with life. They are not allowed to fish in the waters off the coast.
It has been this way since the commies took over.
It's genetic. That began when little Fidel was conceived inside Margaret Trudeau.
Communist regimes have always been a mafia. Just because they wrap themselves in slogans doesn’t mean it isn’t naked coercion.
Right...
Because, who would notice that some Hispanic guy made 45 USA-Cuba round trips in ten months?
In Việt Nam after the old revolutionaries died off the Party seems to have become something like an enlightened Mafia and has got off the people’s backs pretty much thanks in part to the pressure to ease exerted by Clinton and the Bushes. When we have Democrats in control here things deteriorate some in Việt Nam. With Mr. Biden at the top here Vietnamese government has to make nice with the Chinese monster. Vietnamese people see all that and those that immigrate to the US, like the Cubans, rarely vote Democrat.
A Cuban emigre I know describes the people there today as degraded by fear, repression, corruption, dire poverty, and lack of religion. His estimate was that even if Cuba threw off the communists, it would take a generation and lots of outside help before the country began to recover its sense of how a normal society functions.
I knew quite a few Vietnamese in California. They all hated the commies.
They forgot to make their contribution to Biden and the Dem party or they would have been ignored.
The point in communism when you run out of other peoples’ money.
Thanks for posting.
The drug cartels have put the commies out of business.
*I knew quite a few Vietnamese in California. They all hated the commies.*
A few of them run for office as democrats, the party that sold them down the river.
Faces the most disastrous economic collapse in history.
